You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My family received nothing short of amazing service at Woodlawn. Even after knowing Woodlawn did not handle the initial cremation of my mother. My brother and I needed the ashes split so that we could retain a part of our mother's ashes. Ryan went above and beyond expectations. He gave us clear and concise guidance on what I needed to do to make sure that I would able to transport her remains home with me to CA without incident. I can state enough how much this visit gave my family and I peace of mind and comfort. He was very professional and sympathetic.”

“How this place has maintained for as long as they have is beyond me. My father, who is recently deceased, purchased a plot and vault from Woodlawn more than 30 years ago. So naturally when he passed we thought Woodlawn would be the logical choice. Wow, were we wrong. Upon meeting with them, Stephanie proceeded to wheel and deal me into an "affordable" burial. It became very clear that she was selling me as much as she could get away with. After a terrifically horrible 30 minutes with Stephanie, she advised that $12K was the very cheapest she could do our funeral for. When asked about Military options, etc she claimed she knew nothing. When asked about cremation she said it would only be $300 cheaper. When asked any questions that could lead to her giving us options that didn't suit her commission, she referred us to the funeral home and crematory... What? I said that is what I thought you were? She advised she was from the Memorial dept. They intentionally compartmentalize the departments which makes the process even more confusing. Finally, she tried to get me to sign a liability statement to ensure I would be responsible for all charges. I could not believe my ears. I ran out of there so fast. The entire experience reminded me of a really bad used car dealership. Awful. Luckily I found a family owned establishment in D.T Hampton. They saved me $8K, and the process could not have been more professional. The takeaway is that very few people know anything about the burial process. Please please do your research, and do not use this business.”

“My Father assed away August 28th 2017and was buried Sept. 1st in Woodlawn Cemetery. My mother is buried beside him who was buried there in 2004. 4 months has passed and my Father who was buried with Military honors still has no grave marker. The counselor assured us the bronze plate Would be there within 4 to 6 weeks. After a month-to-month and a half and no marker I called to find out why and the counselor apologized and assured is it was ordered and would be sent in a couple of weeks. That 2 weeks passed and no grave plaque so I called again and talked to counselor and she found paperwork still there had not been sent. My Daughter drove from North Carolina to see the grave but was horrified to see a Veteran in an unmarked grave. I talked to the administrator and asked who dropped the ball and no one wants to take accountability. Since Woodlawn has started doing funerals Seems like graves are no longer priority. That is where my parents wanted to be buried I respect that, they paid for plots in 1971. I would never use them for anything and all family feels the same. I have many family members there but I don't feel the respect that all of them got back in the day. Very dissatisfied with treatment of a Veteran Who always wanted to be in a prominent Cemetery. It's the thought that counts because he was treated with utter disrespect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You need to remember why you are in business, yes to make money but put families first because customer service is not First priority here!!!!!!!! Jones Family Very Dissatisfied!!!!!!!!! Nn”
