You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My family has used Whitfield many times. They have always been a blessing, we are very thankful for them, and highly recommend.”

“I DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE A ONE STAR. I do not care that some of my family has used this facility for their family servicesin the past. This place has been completely rude to me and my immediate family, Mrs whitfield has hung up on my stepfather multiple times, caused a massive rip in our family. It takes days to get a call back (3 to 7 says at the max). They have lost my mother's jewelry that was on her when they picked her up from her home and they even told me they didnt have it even though records show that no one removed her jewelry before being transported to the funeral home by their personnel. I gave permission to gene for my aunt, who lived in Florida, to pick up my mom's remains and she was told no. We had to pay out more money than we had to have my mom shipped out of state. They refused to help me with closure to at least give me a photo to see my mom since they wouldn't let me see her in person. I feel like losing my mother is some sick joke. This place is run so crappy that other facilities i have spoken with are shocked my family is going through this. I DO NOT RECOMMNED THIS PLACE EVEN FOR AN ANIMAL.”

“This has taken me 6 years to discuss. 6 years where every day I have tried to block it from my mind. 6 years of agony over a lost moment that I can never reclaim and it has changed me and my life forever. I can still hear Mrs Whitfields voice as if it were yesterday. I'll never forget the words she spoke or the tone in which she spoke them. I'll never forget the feeling that came over me or the look on my Mother's face. Every moment is frozen in time, from the tempature in the room, the scent in the air and the vision of my precious Son laying on that cold steel table covered in a dingy blanket. I can still see his face every time I close my eyes. I couldn't imagine how the worst moment in my life could possibly get any worse, after all I'd just lost my precious boy, my first born and only Son and the light and love of my life. He was my world, my everything and he was dead. Taken from me suddenly and tragically in an automobile accident. What could possibly be worse? The pain I was in was so deep that it rendered me helpless. I was but a shell of the woman who prior, never would have stood for or obeyed those horrifying words that came out of Mrs. Whitfield's mouth. Words that haunt me to this very day. I had words too. words I needed to say to the boy lying on that table. We'd been a team since I was only 18. We'd grown up together. We had our own special language and things we only said to one another that no one else would understand. Just us. I needed just a few minutes. A moment in time that comes and goes so quickly one barely notices. Words from a Mother to her Son. After all, it would forever be the last time I would ever see him. These words I needed to say to my boy were going to have to sustain me for the remainder of my days on this earth. I waited patiently while others filed through. I was trembling both inside and out as the tears flowed down my face in a never ending stream. Any second and it would be just the two of us. I would hold his hand for the last time and kiss his cheek, whisper those special words in his ear and say goodbye forever. It was paramount to me and I know to him as well. What happened next was even worse than everything that had already happened and it haunts me to this very day and will for the remainder of my days on this earth. Mrs. Whitfield changed my life forever and I can never and will never forgive her. At first I thought I heard her wrong. Who would deny a Mother 2 minutes to say goodbye to her child? Certainly not someone whose business it was to help us through this traumatic and catastrophic event. "NO. You've taken up too much of my time as it is, you all need to leave now!" I was stunned, shocked, frozen. I tried to speak but nothing came out. Inside I was screaming for my baby boy, outside I was frozen in such shock and grief and complete and utter helplessness as she hurriedly closed the door between me and that boy on the table. I strained for one last glimpse and she was gone. He was gone and that one moment, that one most important moment was gone. Lost to me forever and ever and ever. 2 minutes of The Whitfields time changed the remaining minutes, days, weeks, years and decades of my life. I still cannot fathom such cruelty, such lack of compassion and humanness. Please, don't let the callous, cold and uncaring take care of your loved one. These people are a whole other level of evil and pure greediness that has no business in this business. I just pray that no other Mother or loved one ever has to suffer the unrelenting pain that I must live with every day. I hope by finally telling my story, you'll make a different choice in the funeral home you select. If I accomplished that, then the pain and tears that I have shed non stop as I wrote this, will have been worth it. I wish you the best on your journey of healing. Thank you for your time in reading this. Peace and love to all. Timothy Gordon's Mom”
