You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“James Cole Funeral Home provided exceptional service. I didn't know what to expect with this being my first time ever planning a service. Will Crawley and the rest of the staff made it seamless! They exuded professionalism and moments of laughter to lighten the mood when needed!! They never pushed their agenda off on us but always listened to our wants and made them come to pass. They showed my father well. They've also followed up with me several times to see how my family and I were coping, reminding us of the free empathy services available to us. I appreciate them ALL and I can't thank them enough! THANK YOU ALL, TRULY!! Kenyona Deyampert”

“Working with James H. Cole was an absolute nightmare—without a doubt, the worst experience I've ever had, especially during such a painful time. My father passed away on my birthday, at his home down south, and the whole ordeal was a disaster from start to finish. He had a burial plot here in Detroit, but getting his body moved was an infuriating lesson in incompetence and poor organization. Cole still hasn’t bothered to post any information about him on their website—how unprofessional and disrespectful can you be? My father was a retired communications chief for the Detroit fire department, a man who served with honor, and yet his friends and family couldn’t even send condolences or flowers because these people couldn’t get their act together. The news spread slowly because Cole refused to post any notice—they failed to do the most basic part of their job. The services we managed to hold didn’t even honor his rank or his life; it felt like a slap in the face. The only person from Cole who showed any decency was the driver—they were the only redeeming part of this whole ordeal. The rest of their staff was dismissive, rude, and downright disrespectful. They insisted on setting everything up days in advance—pretending they cared about organization—yet they wouldn’t guarantee that the body would even be accepted. And when my brother tried to explain how crucial it was to get things right, they were short, unkind, and completely dismissive. This was not just poor service—it was an outright disgrace. They were paid for this service! I know Cole is popular, but after what we went through, I’d never use them again. When my mother died, we went through Pye, and it was a thousand times better—professional, compassionate, respectful. The difference is staggering, and it makes me furious that families are subjected to such neglect and indifference. I wish I could give them no stars.”
