You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“do not entrust your loved one’s homegoing service with this used car salesman. communication and service are terrible. my family and i went with samuel l. jackson mortuary Dec 2025 after attending a service there earlier this year which seemed nice then, but we were sadly mistaken. my grandmothers service was rush by staff & team, the pianist was asleep on stage the majority of service & played for a total of maybe 7mins or less throughout, no ambience, nothing. my family & i also booked obituary services with them from a printed example that the owner showed us stating that he himself made, and he ensured us that my grandmother’s would be the same and just as nice, just to send the draft at almost 10pm on dec 4th (service was set for dec. 6th) and it was completelyyyyy opposite. the color grading was terrible, words all unaligned, wings looking like they’re about to pop out of her shoulder caps, and when i promptly respond to let him know that this was not what we asked for and not what we were promised, he said “he was working with company in north carolina” and how “they didn’t have the template”. when initially he promised he had a “team of skilled graphic designers” to suit all age demographics’s obituary needs. he then texted me at almost 2am Dec 5th saying they would not be able to make the obituaries at all and tried to refer me to somebody who wanted $750 for 50 obituaries, mind you my grandmother’s funeral was scheduled for the next morning, Dec 6th at 10am. so i spent all day the day before trying to make the obituaries myself, just to finish at 2pm & have every printing company in Mobile say they wouldn’t be printed in time. i then had to go buy a $400 printer to print them myself. he refunded only $75 for “inconvenience” after i pestered him about it. business was extremely sloppy. my family and still made the best of everything for my grandmother, and i know she’s proud of us still. but this is not how we intended to send her off and it is our hope that from this review, the owner and his team will think more about their business practices, ethics, and moral standing when it comes to what should be a field for the compassionate, not those looking to profit from the grief of others.”

“I was continuously told that another service was going to be in place at 1pm though my grandmothers service was at 10am that morning, from the beginning to the point of leaving I felt as if we were being rushed. we did not start the service until about 10:15 due to us waiting on a few family members who were coming from out of state but we already knew the service would not be long so that wouldn’t affect our timing assuming most times that you’re given atleast a hr - 1hr 30 minutes for the service. We paid around 200$ extra for them to include a musician but yet the service was silent besides the pastor speaking while leading the service. My sister had to request that the musician played music after about 20 minutes into the service and he did that for about 3-4 minutes before getting up from the keyboard sitting in a chair on the stage and falling asleep after waking up at the end of the service he played music as people were exiting the building. The set up was nice though and one guy did help us put together a cut out that we were having trouble getting to stand properly.”

“I would like to thank Samuel Jackson Mortuary for the outstanding services rendered during the passing of my husband. He did an outstanding job with his remains. He was very professional and timely. Everyone in my family spoke very highly of the services and outstanding job performed during our time of bereavement. The funeral home in Tennessee spoke very highly of you and appreciated how well you worked with them to transfer the body. Just like you told us everything was ready by the time they received the body in Tennessee. All they had to do was take him in to the ceremony. Our family will always remember how well you took care of us.”
