You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Have called and walked in several times to get my grandparents picture replaced or to even ask if I could just order the stuff and do it myself. No one will get back to me. Its always yeah we'll give you a call. Wish there was better communication.”

“Absolutely DISRESPECTFUL to my mother’s memory and absolute lack of sympathy and empathy for her family and loved ones trying to visit her memorial! Woodlawn Memorial Park and now also Service Corporation International of Houston (new purchasing corporation of Woodlawn) have failed to provide care to my mother’s grave for nearly 2 1/2 years now! Is this how you would treat your own mother or loved one’s grave? An absolute DISGRACE! My father Buddy Dudley has been asking for my mother’s grave to be cared for properly for far too long now! NOW, WE MUST DEMAND IT! We should be able to visit my mother in COMFORT seeing that she can rest PEACEFULLY- NOT endure additional emotional DISTRESS due to such an obvious lack of care or regard for her memorial site.”

“The staff were helpful with the burial of our son. However, the maintaining of cemetery grounds and graves is lacking, Grave markers are bent and damaged by grounds crews without repairing them. Lawns are weed infested and scalped during mowing. Vases are damage during mowing. Flowers are cut leaving debris covering the grounds. Trees need to be pruned and shaped. Many grave markers are up rooted by tree stumps. One large stump remains untouched. During the digging of new graves the surrounding graves are sometimes damaged without notifying the families. Grass covers many graves without trimming. Being a Perpetual Care Cemetery the standards do not meet expectations. The staff seem more concerned with having nice offices and interior facilities. I am saddened by the lack of care to the grounds and graves.”
