You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I went from giving 1 star to 3 and here is why.... I know that funeral homes are a business and requires payment but when you are notified to come to a private residential home that means we picked your company. Pete did not have to have the price list in his hands and that be the first thing he wanted to discuss. Losing someone is devastating and talking about money when you don't have money that adds to more stress. Just be respectful please and read the room. Staff was half and half on friendliness. I seeked out to just deal with the older gentlemen because you can tell they truly cared. One name stuck in my head and that's Gary. Thank you Gary for everything. I hope I remembered correctly. I do remember it started with a G. There was an older lady there that was directing traffic in side the building that was very disrespectful. Remember not to start any talks/decisions until after the spouse arrived. You don't know the weird dynamics of each family you will be dealing with.”

“Simpson Funeral Home provided professional and compassionate service to our family at the time we needed it most. John guided us through the process, anticipated our needs then made the whole event dignified and well thought out. John and Gilbert also assisted with the burial, coordinated with local resources and were meaningful companions to our family on that day.”

“Our family was treated with the utmost love and respect from all the employees. The professionalism of the obituary, the knowledge of the procedures, and the kindness with how my mother and I were treated touched our hearts and made a sorrowful time much better. John Porter, Anthony, Pete, Patrick, Gilbert Yopp, Richard Woods and many others made us feel like family. They made us a DVD of the service, live streamed the chapel service, and created a DVD of the slide show. They hand delivered the flowers and all the pictures the day after the service. We are forever grateful to them.”
