You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I recently lost my mother and chose St. Mary for her final services. The staff here were absolutely wonderful and caring in every aspect of my mother's care. They made my family feel welcomed and provided a warm and caring atmosphere. The services they provided were the very best and I am more than happy we selected this location. Having the option to pre-purchase has prompted me to make and pay for my final plans now.”

“While the customer service during my brother’s burial and funeral arrangements was truly excellent and compassionate, our experience since then has been deeply upsetting. On multiple occasions, our family has visited his gravesite only to find that items we thoughtfully placed there—decorations and personal memorials—had been removed and thrown away by the groundskeepers. We understand and appreciate the cemetery’s efforts to maintain the grounds and keep the site clean, and we are fully aware that rules and regulations exist. We have made efforts to follow them. However, some actions feel unjustifiable. For example, a temporary stone headstone was not allowed and was removed, leaving his gravesite completely empty. The headstone is non-porous and was placed on his designated space. This is only one example of the times and objects that were removed from his site. This has been incredibly painful for our family and feels deeply disrespectful, especially while we are still grieving. Leaving meaningful items at his gravesite is one of the few ways we honor and feel connected to him. While maintenance is important, there should also be compassion and respect for families who leave objects to remember their loved ones. I truly hope management reevaluates these policies and improves communication so grieving families are treated with greater sensitivity and understanding.”

“When it comes to reviews, I’m usually one to just read them. I’ve never been disappointed or frustrated enough to write one myself until now. I do want to preface that all of the staff I've worked and interacted with are all very nice and kind. But that doesn't mean they are good at what they do. I've been extremely upset with the amount of miscommunication and unprofessionalism regarding my mom's funeral services, which literally just happened yesterday and the day before. No one notified me or made sure I knew what to bring and what to prepare for her funeral. I felt like they just assumed I knew everything. They also had no idea where my mom's clothing was for a moment, even though they were dropped off at the front desk and was signed off. Another instance was when we arrived to the cemetery for committal, one of my family members asked one of the staff there if the burial site we were next to was for my mom. They said yes, even though it was for someone else. Do you guys talk to each other and even know what’s happening? I also got an absolute earful about what I should do during the procession for what felt like 5-10 minutes straight by one of the funeral directors. Like dude I just lost my mom while 23 years old, and you're talking to me like you're my football coach? I would've loved a more concise explanation of what to expect and what to do instead of a long-winded one. It even could've been an email or a printed paper with instructions and I would be fine. There were also issues with my mom’s death certificate being cleared and approved, which I understand and acknowledge that it was an issue with the county and not the funeral center themselves. My family and I were waiting for almost three hours before my mom was finally buried, and after 2 1/2 hours, they finally decided to provide us with a tent and a bucket of ice for our waters as my family and I were out in the sun the entire time with no tent or shade. I appreciate their efforts to address the issues at hand, but I did not appreciate how slow they were. I think the absolute kicker is how they left my mom's flowers after the committal, as seen in the photos provided. I don't think it takes that much effort to make flowers look nice and presentable, and it definitely would not have killed them to take the flowers off of the stands and put them in the empty vases. I don’t want to speak to anyone to try to discuss this further, so please don’t even bother responding to me. I write this because I just hope that they will improve for other families, whenever that will be.”
