You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Please read, you will know much about the business you are dealing with! This business gets money under your request for services, sign a contract, once you leave with impression they will take care of your funeral needs change the agreement to their own convenience. Most people under emotional grief and dealing for the first time under the stress rely to such services like we did! My sister contacted Joevan Nguen (Joe) who promised to provide mortuary services including picking up the body from hospital, then to do following services on Wednesday, such as washing, viewing and transporting to cemetery all in one day. We accentuated that due to deceased person's birthday on Tuesday we couldn't plan viewing and burial on that day. For that reason we are willing to wait one more day to organize the funeral process on Wednesday. He agreed, we signed the contract. He picked the body next day reporting on the following that due to lack of his staff on scheduled Wednesday he will split the service and provide the viewing on Tuesday (deceased's birthday) but transporting for the burial on Wednesday. That was against what we were asking him, not to schedule anything on Tuesday. I contacted asking him for a reason he changing our agreement, he said that doesn't have washing personnel to provide the ritual on Wednesday. I said will find another washer who will be paid extra just to do everything in one day instead of making people coming to funeral process twice in two different days. He said that my washer can't provide the ritual by herself and need additional person to help that he couldn't provide. My washer said she always does it by herself without any other person's help. He said "I am done arguing with you" and hang up the phone on me... it was shocking, his attitude and disrespect! I tried to contact Rose, who also was part of the business, but she said it's not my business and referred to solve all questions with Joe. I continued texting him but he will not respond. My washer contacted Joe but he didn't let her in. I had less than 2 days left before the scheduled date for open grave at cemetery. In agony we started calling all mortuaries in San Diego hoping to find a decent place that can help us to provide a service in a quality manner. Luckily I found Bravo Funeral Services who provided outstanding service in one day on Wednesday. We came and signed a new contract with them and our washer did the offered to Joe washing at Bravo Funeral Services on Wednesday. My sister said that Joe lives far away from his business and he didn't want to wake up early and drive to make everything on Wednesday. That's outrageous!!! Later we asked for the refund from Cali Home Funeral Services and they said we can refund only 40% from what you have paid to us because we have picked another company! We will not recommend this business to anyone!”
