You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Awful! My parents were to be buried June 30th and our family could only attend if we purchased a grave side service..so we did. We were told their would be a canopy and chairs set up. We scheduled for 2pm but when we arrived nothing was set up. My mothers engraved urn tag was missing. We were not allowed to place urns in ground as planned. Many family/relatives had brought fresh blooms for everyone to place on top urns…that was not allowed. Instead blooms were placed into white vault tubs. When things were finally set up we were given a small tent covering and they placed the wrong flower spray and had to go find the correct spray. If we had known urns could not be placed into ground I think we would have requested use of chapel vs grave side…chapel would have been cooler, easier for elders and more than half the cost. I spoke to Kathy whom said she was sorry we were not given all the facts. So very sad. J Follow up to previous post…owners reached out and were very compassionate and wanted to make things right. We are very impressed with their dedication! J”

“NOT THIS YEAR. I am upset and deeply saddened that The LAST and ONLY way we can celebrate a holiday with our dead son has been taken away from us. For 5 years I have mothered my dead son buried at Haven of Rest by decorating the bench We paid for and was installed at our son's grave. But, NOT THIS YEAR. This year we have learned Any and All decorations and treasures will be removed. Only flowers placed in the in-ground planter or a 6 inch pot on the marker are allowed. I am understanding of requirements to allow for landscaping maintenance during the grass growing season, but not allowing us to decorate the bench we purchased or place wreaths during the winter just hurts us. A sterile and bare cemetery is not comforting. Disappointing Haven of Rest, extremely disappointing.”
