You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I've never told this to anyone except my husband but my father in law was at heritage and some of the family had called abd ask about the service time and due to a couple of family members were told that my father in law wasn't there . Not thi king of what my father in law would have wanted which was who this was about lied and said he wasn't there. When my youngest son and I went to view my father in law there was embalming fluid coming out of his mouth. It was horrible . Lying to the other family and friends was horrible . I wouldn't suggest heritage funeral home in cullman to ANYONE ANYWHERE”

“Very nice funeral home. Amanda was absolutely the best director. She genuinely made me feel like I was one of her family members. When mom my died I just happened to pick this funeral home, in a panic. I'm very thankful I chose this one. Thank you for giving me the best experience I could have had during that time.”

“Oddly as it may be, we actually had an apprentice work with us on the arrangements for my brother's service who did an amazing job. Had it not been for the education provided and the willingness from the apprentice we worked with to make sure all of our questions were answered, the review score I gave would have been a1. However, I have to say that overall, the service provided by the facility was average at best. The part that really solidified the mediocrity of the matter was when I called to ask for assistance filing the life insurance claim on behalf of my brother and was told that they don't do that if the facility has already been paid which is not at all true considering they filed for my dad's life insurance after his service had been paid in full. Anytime a business seems to make the rules up to suit whoever happens to answer the phone, it never sits well with me, but I think I am from a dying breed that still thinks customer service and customer appreciation are paramount when it comes to running a business. I can certainly assure that my response after being paid thousands and thousands of dollars would not have been, "we don't do that after we've been paid"" when asked to simply file a form. My recommendation is to plan ahead and look at all of the facilities that provide this type of service before making a decision about where to take your loved one.”
