You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I came here by suggestions of a good friend. When I arrived for my appointment and she started discussing financial the lady thought it would be best to refer me to their sister company Informed Choice. Jerry with Informed Choice was in the building already so he came in and discussed their prices/packages with me. When I told them my son had insurance through me from my job at Milwaukee county the lady from Krause immediately said that my job won't work with 3rd party billing because she knew this from past experience. Never bothered to call just said she knew this. I informed my HR department said it wouldn't be an issue and proceeded to give Jerry from Informed Choice all contact information needed. He was not very compassionate or welcoming but thought maybe I was being too sensitive. I truly feel my son's skin color, age and manner of death made them very judgemental and had already decided in their mind they didn't want to work with me. Jerry told me he would contact my HR department and give me a call later. I waited until it was close to closing time and called Jerry to see what happened and he immediately told me my HR department wasn't willing to work with them. I asked why he didn't call me earlier and he just apologized. I called my job and was informed they never said that. We just needed to get paperwork over to the insurance company. I called Jerry back and he once again made excuses making it very clear he just didn't want to help my son. He then tried to refer me to one of their sister companies for just a cremation service. I informed him that was not the service I wanted and that it was clear he had a problem with me so I will be calling elsewhere to do what I need to do and hung up. I ended up finding an amazing funeral home that treated my son and family with much respect and also picked my son up immediately putting me at ease. And Guess what??? This other funeral home also uses 3rd party billing and we had absolutely NO problems with coverage. The service was beautiful and I'm actually thankful I did not use Krause or their sister company Informed Choice especially. Jerry you made me feel so overwhelmed like no one was going to work with me and as a mother who just lost her son a little bit of empathy and compassion wouldn't have killed you. It was very clear you Did Not want to care for my son because of his skin color and manner of death. You treated me also like I was looking for a handout. My son had insurance as well people who love him and his services were more than well paid for with No Issues whatsoever at the funeral home I chose to go to. I will never refer anyone here!!!”

“I have been wking with Informed Choices since 2007. My experience has been nothing but pleasurable each time given the circumstances. I wked with Jerry. He has always been kind, compassionate and helpful to me and my family. Informed Choices took care of everything for my mom in 2007, my brother in 2009, my aunt in 2021 and just recently, another aunt of mine in January 2025. I would easily recommend Informed Choices to any & everyone.”

“Hi we were there in March for the loss of our brother. They were very receptive to our wants and need and went out of their way to help us. Gerry and Lisa were very nice and took a lot of time with us. This was our third funeral we had planned by them and I would highly recommend them. They also are very affordable.”
