You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“J&G is not your traditional funeral home... It's better. My family was looking for something to capture my father's essence. J&G was the place! Alexander Agard is the one who made this possible for us. He went above and beyond for us. He underpromised and overdelivered on everything! From the floral arrangements to the menu. We customized our menu to fit our cultural customs and even included kid-friendly items. Alexander curated a museum of my father's life by using his belongings and photos. Our family was floored by the exhibit. He was humble, calm, and reassuring throughout the entire process. I would highly recommend him and Joseph & Gawler's.”

“Gawler’s Funeral Home provided truly exceptional care for our family. They handled my mother’s recent service with the same professionalism, compassion, and attention to detail that they showed for my father’s more than a decade ago. Their team guided us through every step with sensitivity and calm, making an incredibly difficult time feel lighter and more manageable. The service was beautifully arranged, thoughtful, and exactly what we hoped it would be. Everyone we interacted with was caring, patient, and genuinely committed to honoring our loved ones with dignity. It meant a great deal to us to feel so supported and understood. Alexander Agard was our funeral director at Gawlers who we would recommend to any family.”

“My parents pre-planned for the services of Joseph Gawler's Sons back in 2012. My mother went first and then my father just recently. I cannot tell you how easy it was to get everything done in a very stressful time in our life. Kevin led us through every step with ease. He basically handled everything. Any choices we had to make were simple. We didn't need to worry about a thing as I knew it would get done. On the day of the funeral Kevin, Carole and Lawrence were so helpful and comforting- right there if anything was needed. The next day at the burial Gawler's again guided us through. Even Gate of Heaven cemetery commented that Gawler's was indeed a very special Funeral Home to work with. I would highly recommend them.”
