You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We had our daughter in November 2025, the nursing staff was amazing, but I feel bad for them that they have to deal with some self-centered Doctors. They were trying to force me and my child to stay longer when child and I had no problems. Now fast forward to getting my child's social security card low and behold they spelt her name wrong, so requested a birth certificate to be able to correct it and that was wrong also. We contacted Mary Lanning for THEIR mistake not ours. Their excuse was we weren't there to confirm the spelling when we were there till evening the next day, I guess they don't work in their offices on the weekends. Her name was clearly written on the paperwork correctly. Now it is January of 2026, and they still have not sent paperwork into vital records to correct the problem. I don't even want to rate them when staff is great, but administration is a joke. I am tired of being told the person I or my husband needs to talk to is never in her office and when you leave a message she never calls back.”

“This is an updated review based on a recent emergency room visit. I arrived at the ER experiencing numbness, tingling, and muscle spasms in my arms, face, neck, and legs. These symptoms had begun more than 13 hours earlier but had progressively worsened throughout the day. Unfortunately, the attending physician concluded—before fully entering the room and without asking me any questions—that I was experiencing a panic attack and hyperventilation. This was not the case; the symptoms were later determined to be a severe adverse reaction to a medication I had recently started. While some anxiety would understandably have been a secondary response to the situation, it was not the cause of my symptoms. I am updating this review because the hospital's quality assurance team reached out to me afterward. They listened to my experience, offered a sincere apology, and waived the entire bill for the visit. I do not know whether the physician faced any disciplinary action, and that is not my primary concern. I appreciate that the hospital took responsibility and ensured I was not financially burdened for both this ER visit and the follow-up care I required from my primary physician (which involved a one-hour drive in my compromised condition). On a related note, I am relieved that my condition was not a heart attack or stroke, as the initial dismissal could have had far more serious consequences. In contrast to this visit, I have had two other emergency visits to this hospital that were positive experiences: one for a severe hand injury where I nearly lost a finger, and another for my son following a car accident. This most recent visit, however, was by far the worst I have encountered. That said, the fact that hospital leadership followed up, apologized, and addressed the issue meaningfully is noteworthy and not something I have experienced with most healthcare facilities. I hope this feedback contributes to improved care in the future.”

“My daughter went to the ER for gallbladder attack, they gave her Tylenol through an IV, come on, like that is going to touch the pain, then they gave her medication that would actually calm the pain, the ER doctor ordered a CT, not an Ultrasound like they should have, I talked to the ER nurse and asked if the doctor was going to be around so I could talk to him, they said he was in a meeting, let me tell you this is 2:30am, she was the only patient in the ER at the time.I asked the nurse if they had an Ultrasound tech on call and she said I dont know, I said you have a Radiologist that can read and dictate images from home, she said i dont know. Yes they do, I am a Radiology technologist, I worked ER for many years. I was in disbelief, I live out of town trying to talk to this nurse on the phone that did not know anything. The nurse said this was not emergent enough for them to do surgery, thats crap too. I asked if I could talk to the ER doctor, the nurse said when he comes back in to talk to my daughter. The ER doctor never ever came back in to talk to my daughter, she was discharged after 6 am, they said he was still in a meeting. This ER, likes to money gouge. My daughter then had to make an appointment the next day in a significant amount of pain for an Ultrasound and also a surgeon, because she had a severely enlarged gallbladder with stones and a stone stuck in the duct. My daughter is a college student, and the money gouging was horrendous and for the ER nurse and I guess the doctor also said my daughters gallbladder pain was not emergent. Let me tell you from what I gathered this place has nothing to do with healthcare and the well being of a patient, no patient care going on there.”
