You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am writing this with a heavy heart. During my husband’s funeral service, the mortuary allowed members of his family to open his casket against my explicit wishes and those of my children. This was an extremely personal boundary that should have been respected. The mortuary staff were aware of our wishes beforehand, yet they permitted this to happen in the middle of the service, adding unnecessary pain and trauma to an already devastating day. A funeral home’s role is to protect the dignity of the deceased and honor the wishes of the next of kin. In this case, that responsibility was not upheld. What should have been a final, peaceful farewell was marred by a lack of control, professionalism, and compassion. I hope this review serves as a reminder to others to be extremely clear—preferably in writing—about your wishes, and to choose a funeral provider that will protect those wishes without compromise.”

“I would like to share my experience with this mortuary. My aunt sadly passed away before her November 2023 birthday. A woman named Pam who worked at the mortuary took advantage of my disabled aunt and obtained an insurance policy in her name. When my aunt passed away while visiting family in Sacramento, instead of taking her body to a coroner's office for a proper autopsy, Pam and the mortuary in South Los Angeles picked up her body and embalmed it without conducting an autopsy. Subsequently, they falsified a death certificate in order to claim the insurance money. In 2024, they called my mother, my aunt's sister, to inform her that they were unable to cremate my aunt due to the absence of a valid death certificate. It's been almost a year, and my family hasn't been able to find peace. We've tried reporting them to the Bureau of Cremation and Funeral Home Services, but we're still waiting for a review. This neglectful and unethical handling of my aunt's remains has left us restless. We haven't received any further communication from the mortuary regarding my aunt's cremation or ashes. We refuse to be ignored and will continue to file complaints until my aunt is respectfully laid to rest, and we receive the necessary evidence and redress.”
