You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My father passed away in an accident, and I have been heartbroken since then. My husband has been helping me handle everything with the funeral home. In the beginning, Tara was very kind and easy to communicate with, and we felt comfortable trusting them with my father’s arrangements. However, we did experience some things that were very difficult for us: We were told that my father’s ashes were ready, but the death certificate would take a few more days. We said we preferred to pick everything up together later. After a full week with no update, we emailed to follow up and were told the certificate was still not ready. Two days later, because it had been so long and we urgently needed the certificate for many required processes, we called the City. They told us the certificate had actually been ready for about a week. When we called Tara, she confirmed the certificate had arrived at their office a week ago and said someone had called us, but we had missed the call. However, there was no voicemail, no text, and no email. When we emailed earlier, no one — including Tara — mentioned that the certificate was ready. This felt very unprofessional and added a lot of stress during an already painful time. On Friday, we asked Tara if, since it had already been delayed for a week, we could meet on Saturday morning at the office to pick everything up so we could finally move forward. She agreed on Friday, but on Saturday morning she said she would not be available, even though we had rearranged all of our plans. We were very upset at this point. My husband told Tara that this had been a very poor experience for us and that we would leave a one-star review. We still agreed to meet on Monday instead. Tara felt offended and called back immediately, saying we were threatening her, and spoke to us in a very firm way. As a grieving family who had just lost a loved one, this was extremely hard to hear. After a full week of anxious waiting, being asked to wait even longer was overwhelming. I did not want things to continue negatively. Losing my father has already been the most painful experience of my life, and I had hoped everything about his final arrangements would feel gentle and respectful. I sent Tara a message trying to ease the tension between her and my husband, but I did not receive a reply. On Monday morning, I texted to confirm our appointment and again received no response. I called, but it went to voicemail. I left a message and did not hear back. I called again and no one answered. I felt very worried, but I went to the office in person. I finally met Tara and received everything, and only then did my heart settle. This is not meant to be a negative review. I just feel that we never received an apology for the frustration during the process. I can understand her frustration, but it should not have been placed on us. We did not receive the warmth or communication we hoped for during such a painful time, but I will not deny Tara’s professionalism in other parts of the process. I sincerely hope that in the future, there can be more communication, more understanding, and more compassion for families who are grieving.”

“I will always recommend Affordable Funeral Solutions to anyone who's suffered a loss of a loved one. When my late partner died suddenly, I was without income and needed something affordable to handle retrieving him from the medical examiner's office and having him cremated. I feel so fortunate that I found Affordable Funeral Solutions. I selected a direct cremation and was able to pick up his ashes, belongings (they'd been held at the medical examiner's office), and death certificates all at the same time. They posted an obituary I'd written, which meant a lot to me. I don't want my partner to be forgotten. The staff was incredibly kind and even got a final photograph of my late partner's tattoo of my name before he was cremated, by my request, since I wouldn't be seeing him before the cremation and wanted one last look at it. The staff is wonderful, and they make you feel supported during a very hard time. I'm so grateful for them and will gently suggest them to everyone I know when the time comes. I greatly appreciate that they have their prices listed directly on their web site, too. It's a relief to know what you're getting without having to call and talk to a lot of different funeral homes. Affordable Funeral Solutions will always have my gratitude. ♥”

“Cindy and Joey were very respectful and caring. After my grandpa passed, I dreaded having to deal with everything afterwards during a difficult time for me. But Cindy and Joey, made everything such an easy process and made my family and I feel genuinely supported. We are deeply grateful for their kind service and recommend them to anyone looking for a caring funeral home.”
