You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Lala and Leslie with Frank Wilson funeral home were the most accommodating people I’ve dealt with in these circumstances. I had spoken to Lala earlier over the phone and expressed my wishes. She had a power point like presentation that reflected exactly what we talked about and with even more edification for us. It was a relaxed and easy experience, thanks to these two Ladies. Everything went as planned as well. Very professionally handled. Sincerely, Crockett Crow”

“We received professional but yet compassionate care from this fine funeral home and the team associated with it. The process was quick and painless which is what I wanted. It was clear that I was in full control of the pace and setting for the arrangements with great discernment from the director to what our needs were. With our greatest respect, thank you!”

“Harrowing. That is the word I would use to describe our experience with this group of utterly incompetent, blundering, and inept individuals. While facilitating their services, we were met with difficulties at every turn, significantly increasing our emotional distress by sending our deceased loved one into the afterlife in the most appalling way possible. Our biggest issue was the lack of communication between their entire team. We arrived early for visitation so that we could have some private time with my grandma. However, we were stopped because the pastor wanted to meet with us first. It took so long to meet with him that visitation hours had started and people had already gathered in the visitation room. We weren’t granted a proper private moment. Folks, let me tell you… when we saw what they had done to my grandma… There are no words to describe the horror we felt when we saw the results of her processing. My grandmother looked unrecognizably atrocious. She was alarmingly deformed. She did not look like the woman we all knew and loved. Granted, I understand that people never quite look the same after they pass and are prepared for visitation, but this was beyond anything that would be deemed ‘acceptable’ by anyone else’s standards. We immediately brought it up to the staff and they had a sheepish, shamed expression on their face when they admitted that they were aware! They had agreed that she looked horrifying! How is that even acceptable? They had no excuses for it, but instead blamed the embalmer. Much to our dismay, the visitation went on and we had to watch the faces of our loved ones cringe in disgust as they viewed her. During that time, we had instructed the staff that we did not want to allow additional visitation the next day before the service, but that we wanted to be there for the closing of the casket. They had agreed and it was decided. The next day when we arrived for the service, two new staff members were overseeing operations. When we asked them when we would be closing the casket, they informed us that the casket had already been closed as that’s what they were instructed to do. We didn’t know what to do at that point since we had already been very clear the previous day about our wishes regarding the casket. The staff offered to re-open the casket and allowed us some time to say goodbye, which was appreciated, but frustrating. The disappointment continued with multiple occurrences. The staff on-site didn’t know that the pallbearers were supposed to receive boutonnieres, so they didn’t know where to get them. We didn’t receive a procession because apparently we needed to request a police escort days in advance, which no one informed us about. When the service started, one of the staff member’s car alarms went off for so long that my mom and I had to exit the service and track down the owner to get them to turn it off. When we returned, the pastor’s so-called “service” was a joke. Instead of talking about the woman we were there to mourn and share memories about, 90% of the service was a church sermon, which we had previously emphasized that we didn’t want. When we arrived at the gravesite, the chairs were filthy, completely covered in dirt and grime. No one wanted to sit in them. The felt cover beneath the casket had gaping holes, exposing the six-feet drop below, which was beyond unprofessional. At the end of the service, we were asked what address the flowers should be delivered to, even though we had given them our address several times and it was on all of the paperwork. It was all so monotonous and exhausting. If this is the best that Odessa has to offer, I feel badly for the citizens here. You should demand better service because there is better service out there. Perhaps the individuals at Frank W. Wilson Funeral Directors should go back to mortuary school and study funeral home etiquette because, frankly, it's currently dismal. I implore you… seek after-life assistance elsewhere. Your loved ones deserve better. You deserve better. My grandma deserved better.”
