You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I used the Sanders Funeral Home for the cremation of my father. They were professional and compassionate, and they answered all of my questions. They even helped me with a keepsake pendant urn I purchased on etsy. So I'd recommend them to others, with the caveat that I hope nobody has need of their services anytime soon.”

“We have been using Sanders Funeral Home for over 10 years. We have utilized their services twice for immediate family members, first for my older sister in 2021 and now for my father in 2024. Being in a small town, there are limited options available. Despite their busy schedule and our family's specific religious requirements for the funeral service, Sanders Funeral Home went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. We are extremely grateful to Bee and Aubrey for their assistance. Their pricing is quite reasonable, and they offer a wide range of options for honoring your loved ones who have passed away. Since a funeral is a once-in-a-lifetime event for our loved ones, we wanted the best, and we certainly received that from Sanders Funeral Home. We will definitely be turning to Sanders Funeral Home for any future needs.”

“Made what was a tragic event even more stressful. When talking about options, we were asked if we were interested in any “merchandise” which wasn’t the best choice of words, in my opinion. We ended up taking the catalog home to look at urn options and other memorial items. I ended up finding a necklace that would hold my mom’s ashes, so I’d have her with me. The catalog price stated $159 but did not mention a $600 price increase for yellow gold, even though the photos were in yellow gold for some of the items. It wasn’t until I got a call a few days later after placing & paying for the order that I was alerted of the price increase. The employee came off as pushy when asking if I was sure I didn’t “just want to go with the silver”, or “pay the price difference today”, and said that it’d be days before a refund could be issued. It was extremely disappointing and I ended up not being able to go through with it and just asked for the refund. After that, I kept having to play phone tag in order to approve the bracelet my sibling ordered. I’d get a call in the morning, and call back that afternoon and they’d be gone. Ended up having to cancel that because my family and I were fed up with the hassle. All in all, I think we have limited options in our area but I really think they could do better.”
