You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“There are truly no words big enough to express the gratitude we have for Eric at Minnesota Valley Funeral Home. In September, we had to do the unimaginable — say goodbye to our son. It was the most heartbreaking time of our lives. From the very first moment, Eric didn’t just treat us like clients… he treated us like family. He sat with us, cried with us, listened to our stories about our boy, and gave us all the time we needed. He never rushed us. Not once. He understood that this wasn’t just a service — this was our child. Every detail was handled with such tenderness and care. He made our son’s service absolutely beautiful — more beautiful than we could have imagined during so much pain. He honored him. He respected him. He made sure our baby was celebrated in the most meaningful way. One of the moments that will forever stay in our hearts was when Eric brought his fancy car for our son’s final send-off. That gesture meant more than words can explain. It was special. It was dignified. It was love shown through action. In a moment that shattered us, he gave us something beautiful to hold onto. Eric was there every single step of the way — guiding us, supporting us, and carrying some of the weight when we felt like we couldn’t stand. We will never forget his compassion, his patience, and his heart. If you ever find yourself needing a funeral home that truly cares — that sees your loved one as more than just a name — I wholeheartedly recommend Minnesota Valley Funeral Home. Eric, thank you for loving our son the way you did and for holding our family up when we were falling apart. We will be forever grateful.”

“Peter did a good job taking care of most of the pre-funeral details but, after the initial meeting, he basically stopped doing his job. I wasn't notified when my brother's ashes were ready to be picked up, he never informed me when the death certificates were available and mailed them to my home 2.5 hrs away (versus having me pick them up as I requested), he didn't respond to emails, etc. NOT a good experience during a very hard time!”
