You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Melanie is an exceptional funeral director who consistently goes above and beyond for the families she serves. Even from out of state, I trust her completely because she handles every situation with professionalism, compassion, and genuine care. She was incredibly accommodating during a very emotional time for our family and ensured everything was done with dignity and respect. I am truly grateful for her kindness and highly recommend her services.”

“I was very thankful that she allowed me to paint my nanny’s nails. That was one thing I will be grateful for. But I gave you a one star for putting personal conversation out for everyone to see. What was said while setting up my nanny’s funeral should have never left that room. Second off the way you spoke to my aunt is way unprofessional telling my aunt to mute her while she was on the phone trying to voice what my nanny wanted in her funeral. And then your remarks to her review to you? That was cold hearted. Our family is dealing with a huge loss. My nanny would be so upset. I pray that you are never treated the way you treated her. My nanny loved us all and she hated us all at times no one was perfect she knew that and she understood it. I wish you would have kept our conversation in the room and not for the whole world to see. Thanks”

“Melanie has no professionalism at all. Her first nastiness started with our meeting to set up the funeral of my Mom ... I'm from SC so my sister had me on speaker phone so I could be apart of planning, when I spoke that my mom did not want her service held there she wanted it where my Dad's service was .... Melanie was pushy and was putting down the place where it was supposed to be held at my Mom's wishes. As I continued to argue that point for my Mom's wishes she told my sister to mute Me. ... To which my sister said no my sister has a right to speak n I'm not rude like that. Then the day of my Mom's funeral I asked her nicely about the pall bearers to ask family first and then if needed other people. She then raised her voice and said would you like to take over after the service since you seem to want to take over. like I was out of line asking a simple question. She didn't care how we were feeling it was all about the profit she was making.... considering if we had the service where my mom wanted it would have not cost us anything other then her preparing my Mom's body everything else was prepaid. It's not even about the money its about being KIND in a very hard time in a family's life... I would never use Melanie's service ever.”
