You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Lester Gee Funeral Home of Bridgeport: We wanted to express our sincere appreciation for the compassionate and professional care you provided during this difficult time. Our family is very grateful for the way you handled the arrangements for Shirley Temple Smith with such respect and sensitivity. In particular, I'd like to recognize Chris Gee, for his communication, availability, and assisting our family. His exceptional professionalism towards us truly made a challenging process manageable. The viewing and ceremony services were beautiful and exactly what we had hoped for. Lester Gee’s Funeral Home Staff dedication to making sure every detail was perfect did not go unnoticed, from the curls on her head, polished nails & rosey lips - was very beautiful. We felt supported every step of the way and were able to focus on grieving and honoring our loved one. We highly recommend your services to any family seeking a supportive and caring team. With deepest thanks, The Family of Shirley Temple Smith”

“I can't say enough good things about the service we received from this funeral home. During such a difficult and emotional time, Chris, our funeral director, was incredibly kind, compassionate, and professional. He went above and beyond to make sure everything was taken care of for my grandmother (Pearl May Williams)—from helping us select the right casket, to coordinating her flight to Jamaica, and even making sure she was dressed beautifully. Every detail was handled with care and respect. The team was also very responsive, answering all our questions and making the process feel as smooth as possible. I’m truly grateful for their support and would highly recommend them to anyone in need of funeral services.”

“I picked up my sister's ashes today and was met at the door by Chris Gee; he was as pleasant and personable as he'd been during my very first meeting with him, and throughout the several times I had to meet or call for assistance. The process of cremation was new to both me and my youngest sister who was with me. Chris called Connecticut Hospice and arranged to transport my sister's body, even before we got to the facility. Once we arrived, he was patient and kind each time he explained something to us. He promptly returned each and every call I made to him. Our situation was unusual in that while my youngest sister and I were doing the planning of our loved one's service and cremation, she had left the insurance to two other relatives. Thus, Chris had to meet (at different times) with each of them, as well. He treated them with the same professionalism and genuine kindness that he showed my sister and me. Once arrangements were worked out; he was even understanding of my attention to every detail, and accommodated even the smallest request, such as making my deceased sister's eyebrows darker. In addition, she died with a terrible protrusion to her lower lip and I was very disturbed by it, but Chris assured me that they would be able to fix it, and they did; her lips looked just like they did when she was alive. And the makeup was perfect (excluding the eyebrows), and natural looking. Even during the service, when my hospitalized daughter asked us to see if she could Zoom into the service, Chris worked to make sure that she could. The only problem was the microphones, and today, when I visited, he had a guy working on that, just as I expected he would. He made a very difficult time so much easier for all four family member who met with him. His professionalism, amiableness, kindness, and understanding are very much appreciative. I recommend this place to all who are looking for someone warm like him, and for a spacious, spotless, and beautiful environment for their loved one's homegoing services, all at a highly reasonable cost.”
