You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I engaged Cook-Walden Forest Oaks for my wife’s and daughter’s service. Be prepared for common sales structures: “good-better-best” pricing, “sticker shock” anchoring, a “gauge tactic” (suggesting a premium option to see if you’re prepared), and the loss of bundled discounts once you remove items. Even after removing services, our total remained close to the original anchor. Financing was offered as six months no-interest. What many people do not understand is that if the balance is not paid in full within that period, interest — over 30% — can be applied retroactively from day one. In a moment of grief, that can turn into long-term debt. We resolved a plot numbering error at no immediate cost, though an additional $5,000 was later added under cemetery charges. On the day of the service, both public bathrooms were out of order and exposed switches were present in the whole area while children were in attendance. I am giving two stars. The facility itself is clean and visually well kept. The process and financial structure, however, left me unsettled. To employees and others in this industry: I encourage you to step back and consider how these structures feel to families in their most vulnerable moments. To anyone reading this: Take your time. Bring support. Shop your options (urn and flowers for example) Review contracts carefully. Understand financing terms completely. You are allowed to pause. And if you’re reading this while grieving. I am truly sorry for your loss.”

“They assisted us during time of hospice with our loved one until we said our final good-byes at the graveside service. They helped us find the perfect violinist to play our loved ones requested music at the graveside service. So many in attendance commented how beautiful the service was. They were a good partner helping us plan and fulfill our loved ones requests.”
