You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Our dear friend of 50 years died recently and we were left with the responsibility of making her cremation plans as she had no family locally. It was a delight to deal with Valerie and Domenick at Hosmer Muehlig Funeral Home throughout this painful time, as they were negotiable on the pricing of the direct cremation we were seeking, plus they were in close contact for three important and stressful days for my friend and I. We asked about witnessing the cremation and providing some personal items before the cremation which they were fine with. We had never experienced this before but it felt very right and for our dear friend to be sent off with her two very best friends right there with her. Domenick and Valerie prepared us in advance for the experience and we felt comfortable with what might be a difficult time for other people. We actually would recommend others consider having this kind of personalized goodbye as it was something we will never forget. After the process was completed, Valerie assisted us in having some vials of cremains set aside which we appreciated. She, Domenick and just earlier today, Chris, all had that professional but warm personality that is so needed at a time of grief. We are indebted to all of you for your kindness, personalized attention and just showing that you cared. Your services were over and above in every way.”

“At every step the team was committed to me and my family. Always respectful, offered very suitable recommendations and helped me/us feel we were being taken care of. We had very special requests, all of which were addressed, and delivered by team without any question. They went above and beyond and I will never forget their kindness. We elected to utilize the services here, passing other funeral chapels that were closer to our residence, because we knew the service and dedication would be what we wanted - a small community atmosphere and they did really care. I am so grateful and will use and recommend the Hosmer-Muehlig funeral chapel in future.”

“I understand that death is something that is dealt with everyday for the workers here but there wasn't even a "sorry for your loss" when we went in to discuss arrangements. I just needed basic stuff so that was simple to get through and they were fine with that. There was a mistake with my Dad's birthday and now it's been 3 weeks since I made arrangements with them and I still have no death certificate. I understand they are waiting on something from the clerks office because of the mistake but there has been ZERO communication on their part. Also, I noticed the birth year wrong on the header of his obituary and asked for them to change it which took a full day to do even though we had just been emailing back and forth when I asked for them to change it. I'm not sure why it wasn't caught on their end considering it is in the first part of the obituary I wrote...they obviously don't even proof read that or look at it at all. I still have no idea if my Dad's ashes are ready....because once again, ZERO communication. This is obviously an already stressful and sad time and this is not making it any better. If there had been some sort of check in or update (even letting me know they are still waiting on stuff), I would have felt a lot better. Now I'm just sitting here waiting, hoping this gets resolved soon. It makes me thankful I hadn't entrusted them with a full funeral arrangement considering their lack of communication and compassion.”
