You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I cannot say enough about the kindness and compassion this funeral home has showed me and my family with the arrangements we did for my dad when he passed away. Mr. O'Boyle and his daughter Meg showed upmost care for your family's' grieving. Somehow, they make you smile and sometimes chuckle in the most difficult moments possible. On another note, they work seamless with your life insurance, and I actually had to call them for the final bill. I would very much recommend this Funeral Home as a final resting place to a loved one!!!! Thank you again Mr O'Boyle and Meg for making such a hard and sad time very easy for the transmission of the family.”

“I recommend this company to anyone who comes across it. The professionalism is outstanding. As a family owned company, every single worker you encounter makes you feel as if you're apart of the family. You feel the kindness and compassion from each employee. My mom had a beautiful and unforgettable service that O'Boyle funeral home was able to help provide. They made every detail simple and stress-free especially during a time of mourning. I never stressed and was confident in all of their work. Thank you to the O'Boyle funeral home for an unforgettable (in a great way) memorial for my mother.”

“The funeral was done to my mothers wishes and I can say nothing about that. However when a company agrees to accept payment from a life insurance policy, they are at the mercy of that company for payment. New York Life is a VERY good company. The funeral home was furnished with the paperwork they filed it out and we submitted the claim. My mother passed 7/1 and was interned 2 days later. Less then 60 days I started getting phone calls stating they have not been paid. I called my rep and was assured they would be getting the money that week. Unfortunately under NO CONTROL of my own the claim got stuck on someone's desk. So after the 5th call in one week and them telling me they would call me on FRIDAY if they have not received the check (today is Thursday). So after ruining my day and not being able to work and spending 30-40 min on the phone with the insurance company I got a I'm sorry for the delay from the insurance company and a verbal assurance that the claim was indeed paid today and the check would go out tomorrow. I called and spoke to the director and basically was told if the check was not in soon they would come after me for the money. So unless you have the money at time of death to pay for the internment of your loved one another funeral pallor might be a better choice. In closing, if money is tight and you have having trouble making your companies bills and cannot wait patiently on insurance assignment choose to either stop doing such or close the doors and retire.”
