Medicare Open Enrollment for 2027: Dates and Checklist
By MedaSynq Insurance Services · Updated · 4 min read
Medicare Annual Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Eligible changes generally take effect January 1, 2027, when the plan receives your enrollment request by December 7. This is different from signing up for Medicare Part A and Part B for the first time.

Which enrollment period applies to you?
Start with the coverage you have now and the change you want to make. A calendar date alone does not establish eligibility. Annual Enrollment allows eligible people to change Medicare Advantage or prescription drug coverage for the following year; people turning 65 have a separate initial enrollment timeline.
The January–March Medicare Advantage window lets existing members switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare and join a drug plan. It does not generally let someone in Original Medicare join Medicare Advantage.
| Period | Timing | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Enrollment | October 15–December 7, 2026 | Eligible Medicare health or drug plan changes for 2027. |
| Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment | January 1–March 31, 2027 | People already in Medicare Advantage who want an allowed change. |
| Initial or Special Enrollment | Depends on your situation | People new to Medicare or with a qualifying circumstance. |
Review next year's coverage, not last year's summary
If you already have a plan, read its Annual Notice of Change and Evidence of Coverage. Compare the 2027 information with how you actually use care. Keeping the same plan name does not mean its doctors, prescription coverage or costs stay the same.
Make a short list of what matters most before opening results. That keeps comparison focused and makes it easier to decide whether your current coverage still fits.
- List the doctors, specialists and hospitals you want to keep.
- Gather medication names, strengths, quantities and your usual pharmacy.
- Check premiums, deductibles, copayments and estimated yearly costs together.
- Confirm the coverage year, county and exact plan before applying.
Consider the effect on coverage you already have
Ask your benefits administrator before changing employer or retiree coverage. If you are considering leaving Medicare Advantage for Original Medicare, review prescription coverage and Medigap separately. The fall enrollment window does not guarantee you can buy any Medigap policy.
If you already have Medigap, check your rights before dropping it. Depending on your circumstances and state protections, returning to that policy or buying another one later may be difficult. Resolve these questions before submitting a change.
Start online and confirm the result
On MedaSynq, start with your ZIP code and select your county when needed. When online comparison is available, continue to the SunFire plan finder. Add your doctor, medication and pharmacy details there, and check that the results show 2027 before choosing a plan. Available plans and enrollment options depend on your location and eligibility.
Opening results does not enroll you. Complete the provider's application when eligible, save its confirmation, and verify the approved effective date. If a deadline has passed, check whether you qualify for a different enrollment period instead of assuming you can still use Annual Enrollment.
Ready to compare your options?
Enter your ZIP code, review available plans and continue to the application provider when eligible. Comparing plans or starting an application does not activate coverage.
