You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When a loved one dies, it is already an inherently difficult process, and Keefe Funeral Homes does a superb job of making the process easy even when the death could be due to suspicious circumstances. I highly recommend using them to preplan with your loved one how they want their funeral and burial to look like. While my Mom was alive, in the spring of 2023, Rob walked us through the process. Mom knew what she wanted: the cheapest possible arrangements ever. Well, Rob quickly made her aware of what that option would be, a sheath, and it turned out that was in fact of no interest to her so she went for the next best thing, a pine coffin. Even though my Mom was not an environmentalist, she was a fundamentalist Christian and wanted to return to dust and was open to my idea of going as green as possible and decided not to get embalmed. Even though I had been to Mount Auburn Cemetery, Rob knew that the waitlist was long and knew that we prioritized certainty so we chose Cambridge Cemetery. He even gave us guidance on where to buy tombstones, which sadly Mom lost interest in planning that part. Cut to over a year later, fall of 2024, immediately after my Mom died, it was a relief not to have to make any arrangements. Even knowing that Mom died because of possible negligence by an assisted living facility and the error of a nursing home (feel free to check out my other reviews for the backstory) and there is supposed to be an open elder abuse claim somewhere, I did not have the forethought to request an autopsy until a friend mentioned it later that night. I immediately called Rob, who already had my Mom's body, for guidance on how to pursue one. In those early moments, you need an expert to walk you through the bureaucratic steps before it is too late to preserve any possible evidence. Do not assume that the authorities will just know. No one is thinking clearly, and Rob gave me instructions on how to proceed. Thanks to him, I was able to contact the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who immediately accepted the case . Rob did a wonderful job keeping me apprised of the shifting location of my Mom's body. Naturally once that part of the process was over, Murphy's law declares that it had to end just before Thanksgiving. The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Rob wanted to discuss dates, and even with the time crunch, he was receptive to a brief delay while I considered the date. My Mom did not want a funeral or for people to gather, but Rob mentioned that at the burial, there was an option to say a few words at the graveside, which I decided to do. They also told me that her body could be buried with my cats' ashes, her grand cats whom she was very close to. If all of it sounds a little dry without the usual sendoff fanfare, it was not. The pine coffin was simple and beautiful. Cambridge Cemetery was wonderful. It was a minimalist, environmentally sound homecoming, and it would not have been possible without Keefe. I will plan my arrangements with them and highly recommend them.”
