You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Kempf was amazing to work with. They were so kind in a a time we were grieving and helped us through every step of the process. They handled everything so well could focus on being present at visitation and funeral. I’d highly recommend.”

“Biggest con artist I've ever had to meet! These people capitalize on ur grief! They wanted $4,5000, for a "basic cremation "! I've lost both of my parents in the last cpl years, and unfortunately my dad pasted away first, on Dec 2nd 2024. I'm not sure how my dad ended up at this place but it didn't matter much then bc he had enogh death benefits that their $4,500 wouldn't have been an issue. I was told not to worry about it, that everything would be taken care of for my dad. Then, my mother passed on Jan 8th 2026. My siblings, that she lived with, that were taking care of her when she passed had sent her to Kempf; bc that's the only place they knew of. At this point we were all under the impression that everything with my dad was completed. I am the one who is covering my mom's funeral so I called them to find out what the process was bc for me this was my first time ever dealing with this type of thing. I put the guy on speaker phone, so my husband could hear the conversation too, as we are partners in everything. This guy says "Well, since nobody has paid us for your dad's cremation, we're going to hold on doing anything for your mother, unless you pay for both." I asked him how much that would be and that's when he started spouting off numbers basically adding up to the $9,000 ($4,500 each). I told the guy I couldn't afford to pay that and he just sat on the phone and said nothing! So much for helping people.... At this point I hung up with the guy and started to self educate on what I could possibly do now. That's when I learned I could have my mother moved to a different facility, a better facility. I mean, who treats people like this when they've just lost their loved one! There were waaayy better ways to have approached this but they failed in a major way! Anyways, I found that out and then found a super great place called "Family First Funeral & Cremation Services" in Marcellus, MI. Their price for a basic cremation is just about $1,100! I called these great folks and Katie was super kind and very informative. After speaking with the other facility, I called these guys back, to inform them of my choice and made sure they didn't try setting her up for a viewing or anything like that. Then I found out I had to pay a $350 "transportation fee", which is whatever, I'll pay it anyways. When I called to pay it I spoke to some lady over the phone. I gave her my email address so she could send me the invoice and the receipt for payment. All I was emailed was a picture of a receipt, no invoice to show what I was paying them $350 for. Then I see it's more than the $350 we agreed on, being $360.50! Not onece was I ever told about a $10.50 surcharge! Their lucky I don't dispute the charge! Rightfully I should though, another dirty trick! The only reason i know it was a surcharge is bc of the receipt picture. I'm still waiting on my invoice. Please for the love of God! Don't ever trust these people with your loved ones! They have zero respect for them or you, it's all about the money here! These people are greedy! God help you!”
