You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“My family recently lost a loved one and went to Cantrell Funeral Home. We sat with Keith for over an hour talking about our loved one and giving him details and stories for use in writing her obituary. As we sat with him repeatedly spelling names and giving dates he was writing the information down as we continued to correct him. He looked up at me and said "Don't worry my chicken scratch is terrible but it will be perfect in the obituary. It was everything but perfect. When Keith sent me the draft to double check I was appalled at what I was reading. Our last name was not only spelled incorrectly but repeated that way 8 times. We wrote him a check for over 4,000.00 that had our name printed on it. He couldn't even check that? If that wasn't enough my mother's middle name was spelled incorrectly (something I corrected to his face sitting at the table) Her age was incorrect, and names on the death certificate were not only spelled wrong, but were spelled in a way that made them an entirely different name. Keith also mixed last names for employers listed as well as mixing last names for surviving family members. All of these incorrect spellings were mentioned in person as we met. He also listed names of children as grandchildren. It was clear that Keith did not even bother to check his own work before sending it to me to be verified. Our time spent with him and his inability to do his job was time wasted. In addition to his lack of professionalism and compassion is the fact that the first paragraph began with her incorrect name and dates it then went on to plug his business saying that "the family entrusted the Cantrell Funeral Home with arrangements." I found this plug extremely tacky as it should have been at the end of the obituary. His business card has in bold enlarged print "Dignity Memorial". Dignity was no part in any of his work. He did refund the money we paid for the obituaries however, My Dad had to drive to the funeral home and write a new check because somehow in this modern age he was incapable of issuing a refund. Incapable describes Cantrell Funeral Home perfectly. I also received a very short and rude email after speaking with Keith saying "I sent you a revised copy of the death certificate days ago and have not heard from you, If I do not hear from you I will assume this is correct" He couldn't even be decent enough to make a phone call to follow up. He made great mistakes and couldn't own up to it or try to be kind. He has no business writing obituaries. I had to re-write the obituary because the poor excuse for effort that he produced was an embarrassment to the family as well as the business he works for. The entire experience was cold, with no respect or compassion towards the loss of a loved one. I would not take my dog to the Cantrell Funeral Home.”
