You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I hate to review this place as if it was a tourist attraction, because it's really more of a chapel for various types of services. There are also memorials for those who have passed on each side. The views are very beautiful around this building.”

“Attended the funeral service of a family friend at Trousdale Chapel. Not reviewing the rest of Valley of the Temple. Trousdale was apparently named after the company that built the structure. Located up a slope (there's a lot of them in this cemetery). Two friendly stray kitties around, a tabby named Cosmo and a tuxedo cat who came to me for pets.”

“This Valley was one of the highlights of my trip when I visited my sister and her family in Kaneohe. The drive to the park is lovely. There are cats that sleep all day on the grounds (I love cats) and the paths through the patches of forest are inspiring. We were able to walk through the chapel. You must remove your shoes. The chapel carvings reminded me of the Dushanbe Teahouse in Boulder, CO where I live—ornate and unique. The shrine is about 20 feet tall! It was beautiful. Luckily, we were able to take photos, but I think we were asked to not use flash and to not speak loudly. It was a peaceful place even though the doors were wide open. Magical. My sister has two daughters and they loved exploring the tall bamboo forest and feeding the koi. These koi are the biggest I’ve ever seen! It’s true that if you keep them healthy, they will grow and grow and live for decades! One of the staff said that some koi were 40+ years old! And they’re always hungry. The girls also loved ringing the giant bell-gong. There are instructions to set an intention before ringing it...or maybe that’s just what I did :) Come prepared for mosquitoes! It’s the only place on the island where I encountered bugs. I happen to be highly sensitive to mosquito bites and got a couple through my leggings. Not a complaint, just a note to those that go! I recommend taking some time to visit this beautiful spot on the island. Valleys, to me, are naturally peaceful. This place was even more peaceful because of the centered energy. I felt rejuvenated by being there.”
