You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“**EVERYONE SHOULD TAKE THEIR BUSINESS TO BROWN FUNERAL HOME, INC (MARTINSBURG WV)** February 12, 2026 First of all, I want to thank Brown Funeral Home and staff (Martinsburg, WV) for their genuine care, strength, and emotional support they provided me when my mother, Ms. Delia Hall, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tues February 3, 2026. From the onset, Brown Funeral Home worked with me to provide the best possible funeral arrangements for my beloved mother. They honored ALL my wishes every step of the way and showed the utmost respect for my mom while she was onsite at their Martinsburg location all the way through when they delivered her rose-draped coffin to Pleasant View Memory Gardens. Not to mention, Brown Funeral Home made things **extremely affordable** and didn't try to upsell or price gouge me (thank you)! Trust me when I say, that's the last thing you need when you're dealing with an emotionally draining, painful, and heartbreaking event like the passing of a loved one, especially your mom. Mr. Jordan M. Fields was the funeral director who exclusively worked with me from beginning to end at Brown Funeral Home. He's the epitome of true professionalism, warmth, and kindness all wrapped-up into one. Jordan is absolutely awesome ("rockstar"), and I genuinely say that with all sincerity. I'm eternally grateful for everything Brown Funeral Home done for my mother, Ms. Delia Hall, who now walks with her two daughters (Dawn & Roxanne French) alongside our Savior Jesus Christ. SIDE NOTE: Thank you Mr. Jerrold Pearson - Family Service Director @ Pleasant View Memory Gardens for your comforting words and emotional support during this difficult time. Without a doubt, it was needed and immensely appreciated. Thank you and God Bless! ~Charnell B. (Daughter)”

“My experience with Brown’s Funeral Home was extremely disappointing and added unnecessary stress during an already painful time. From the very first phone call, communication was difficult. I was initially told they would not accept my loved one into their care at all, and the situation was handled in a very unclear and unsettling way. After that refusal, they were cagey and inconsistent when discussing payment and next steps, which only added confusion and distress. The person answering the phone was evasive, seemed irritated by basic questions, and often tried to end calls quickly rather than taking the time to explain the process. When I did receive answers, they were often short, blunt, and did not actually address the question being asked, which left me with more confusion and additional questions. Many questions were repeatedly deferred to the owner, and it often felt like no one was willing or able to provide clear, consistent answers. The process itself took weeks longer than expected, largely due to poor communication and lack of follow-through. And yes, that did result in the delay of my loved ones services/burial. I frequently had to initiate contact just to get updates or prompt action. There were multiple instances where I was told I would receive a return call, but no one ever followed up. I also encountered conflicting information at different points, which made an already difficult situation even more confusing and frustrating. It did not feel like there was a willingness to work constructively with a complicated family situation, and I was often left feeling dismissed rather than supported. Funeral homes serve families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Clear communication, transparency, and compassion are essential. Unfortunately, that was not my experience here.”

“The director of this funeral home has no sense of decency. After a traumatic event, finding my father dead in his home, on his birthday, I utilized Brown’s Funeral Home’s services. Upon meeting with the director to discuss arrangements, he demanded payment upfront despite not being able to access my father’s bank account, to which I offered proof of funds, until receiving the official death certificate. He wouldn’t even consider payment arrangements. He informed me that I had 3 days and recommended cremation, but my father feared it and that would not have been his wish. The director proceeded to snicker while informing me that I would need to provide clothes for my father, including underwear, since he had not been wearing any prior to death. As well, he disputed whether a military honor would be given gravesite due to my father being discharged early from one branch of the military before being transferred to a different branch. He was smug, shameless and cruel. Deplorable treatment given the fact that I was in such a vulnerable state given the circumstances! I was a lifelong resident of Martinsburg and I couldn’t believe no compassion or comfort offered!! SHAME on YOU! You are disgraceful and disgusting!”
