You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We would not recommend this funeral home to anyone. The way our family was treated by this man was totally disgusting and heartbreaking. I watched my husband and his sister sit and cry because of how this man was describing how horrible their deceased father looked and he didn't think he was going to be able to fix him but he felt they needed to see him for closure. He wouldn't help with finding life insurance plans, wouldn't tell them how to go about getting ahold of someone because their father was a veteran to see if he could get a veteran burial, wouldn't assist with anything even though their website says very helpful. He wanted full payment for the funeral up front and wouldn't budge on that. Sat with his arms crossed while my husband and his sister cried not knowing what to do because they money is all tied up in insurance and benefits. The family finally had enough and ended the video call. A family member called Robson Funeral Home and within 2 hours Brandy let us know where his life insurance plans were, that he could have a full military honors funeral with burial in the military cemetery with military gun salute and fly over. This man said he wouldn't get any of that because he was "only a national guard" Just rude all the way around. We had Robson pick him up and to our surprise had a 4000 dollar bill with this man. For what? We have no clue. He did nothing that we know of other than pick our father up from his home, went for autopsy and then back to the funeral home for a couple days. Plus the meeting we had on video call for an hour and a half of this man talking in circles and belittling our family. TOTALLY DISGUSTING and we are reporting it to the State of Kansas”
