You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I am deeply disappointed in James H. Davis Funeral Home. It is both highly inappropriate and in very poor taste to pressure grieving families into signing over their insurance benefits to the funeral home. At a time when my family was mourning the loss of a loved one, such an approach was not only insensitive but unacceptable. These insurance policies are not burial policies, and there is no legal obligation for them to be used toward funeral expenses. Those costs are the responsibility of the estate, not something the funeral home has any right to demand. You contacted my son and granddaughter, urging them to sign their insurance benefits over to James H. Davis Funeral Home for their stepfather’s funeral, and even went so far as to leave the documents in plain sight at the funeral home in hopes my son would sign. This conduct is intrusive and demonstrates a disregard for appropriate boundaries. Funeral homes have no place interfering in family affairs they do not understand. Families deserve compassion and respect during times of loss—not additional stress, pressure, or manipulation.”

“I have had the honor of dealing with the wonderful staff at Davis Funeral Home on several occasions. They are an amazing and compassionate group of individuals who genuinely care for the families that they serve. They are called upon to care for families when they are hurting and vulnerable. I haven't seen anyone do it better. I am thankful for them.”

“I have never been so appalled. We had the opportunity to have a last viewing of a member of our family. She left behind a mother, 3 daughters and several grandchildren, who cherished her. Additionally, she had siblings, cousins, neices, nephews and friends who all deeply cared about her. Unfortunately, the death was sudden and unexpected. There were no prior arrangements and no life insurance policy. John, the man who worked with the family, was amazing. He was sympathetic, kind and understanding of their financial limitations. He arranged a small viewing so everyone could say good bye before cremation. During the viewing, Bryan Schrock who is a Funeral Director, was extremely rude and inconsiderate. He made it no secret he did not want to be there. We had family traveling from out of state and, when asked what time the viewing was over, "The sooner the better." Later, one of the daughters made a statement about how her deceased mother was sweating. He corrected her saying, "She's not sweating, she's thawing. She's been out too long." He told them no one else wanted to say this to them because they wanted him to be the bad guy. Bryan, who has been there 20+ years...... So the last memory this family has is of the insensitive, judgemental, hateful man who would rather be literally anywhere else. These girls lost their mother, they are struggling financially, and that's the best he had for them? The worst part, it can never be made better. She is forever gone and this is our forever memory of that experience. Shame on you. Do better.”
