You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I understand that funeral homes must operate within schedules and time constraints, and I respect the logistical challenges that come with serving multiple families. That said, I feel it’s important to share my experience because this has now occurred during two services for my family — first my father’s, and later my grandmother’s. During my father’s funeral, it became apparent that the turnout was larger than expected, and as a result, our time to grieve, share memories, and receive support from loved ones felt noticeably rushed. Portions of the service were cut short, and the tone from staff conveyed visible irritation as time passed, which was difficult to experience during such a vulnerable moment. When my grandmother passed, we returned to the same funeral home and unfortunately encountered a similar experience. Again, the service felt hurried, and it reinforced the concern that our family’s needs and the size of our gathering were not fully anticipated or accommodated. Funerals are not appointments; they are moments of grief, ritual, and closure. While time windows are common, being rushed, cut off, or treated with visible frustration is not what most families expect or experience when honoring loved ones. I share this respectfully and honestly, not to be unkind, but in the hope that future families... especially larger ones... are given clearer expectations, more compassionate pacing, or greater flexibility during services that may be their only opportunity for meaningful closure.”

“I recently attended a very large funeral service at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church that Wright and Salmon handled. It was the most beautifully executed service I have ever witnessed . There were so many moving parts, hundreds in attendance, and I could not help but notice how seamlessly they handled every part of it. From moving the guests, the service, the processional, and the final resting place, everything was polished, professional, and impeccably executed. Last year I assisted my brother in planning a funeral in Chicago and I was shocked at how drastically different funeral planning and execution is handled in a large city. Maybe that’s why I was noticing alllll the details yesterday. Maybe it’s because I was an event coordinator for 18 years of my life. But regardless of those things, what I witnessed was pure perfect perfection. And I needed to leave a review to state just that. Highly recommend.”

“Mike, Tim, Lindsay, Tony, and certainly many more members of the Wright and Salmon family made such a difficult life process so easy. We didn’t have to worry about what needed to be taken care of, they took care of everything for us; All involved handled everything with such compassion, grace and class; No “business” attitude at all, simply sincere sympathy, caring, and true commitment to making everything seamless and beautiful for my Mother’s services. This family has been taking care of mine for decades and will be for many more.”
