You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“A friend went to this establishment to have the remains of a loved one interred. From the moment my friend entered the office, Kerry (an employee) wasn’t very nice or polite. She appears to have forgotten the type of business she’s in and that the people (cash cows) are in a very fragile state and don’t know how things are done. When my friend would ask a question, Kerry would almost snap at her when giving an answer. Like no you can’t bring flowers in the chapel or play religious music very low as it’ll greatly disturb other people, when she knew in fact that the whole chapel facility would be empty except for us. Then being adamant about you can only be in the chapel for ONLY 10 minutes then you MUST get out, although no other service was being held after my friends ( we stayed around outside for a good 20 minutes). Then the cost of putting cremains in the ground. The container we bought had to be sealed completely watertight or the cremains wouldn’t be buried. We were told this numerous times as if we didn’t hear it the first time. Every aspect of the cemetery doing something costs you money. You would think that laying a flat stone would be part of the cost of already paid. NOPE. You pay for the stone, but you gotta pay another fee just for the privilege of putting it on top of the buried cremains. Then on the day of burying the cremains, 4 cemetery workers hanging on their shovels even got rude. My friend had a minister to perform a service (as once again the cemetery charges an outrageous amount of $, to have a priest perform in chapel or at grave, separate charges, mind you). So the 4 workers were asked to leave while service was performed. The foreman (I’ll assume and hungover) with a scowl on his face said I didn’t get the memo about any service but I’ll be back in 10 minutes. But for this being a funeral service, I’ll say no more. I know this is a bit long winded, but I think this cemetery is no good. It’s all about the money, and the people who work there aren’t customer friendly at all. I know when I die, I won’t be buried at that dump. I’ll post the total cost per item/service rendered when I get the final tally.”

“Very, very disappointing. We were not allowed to have a few flower arrangements, OR any taped spiritual music in the Mausoleum where my mother’s casket was and where people had gathered. The casket stole by itself completely unadorned. No one from the cemetery itself was even present. The environment was emotionally cold & harsh. I buried my mother there because that is where my father is. But no one else in my family will be using Norte Dame Cemetery again!”

“I cannot believe that the cemetery is not open for Mothers Day. Has I have reason to visit 3 of the diocese cemeteries I find this very disturbing. St Joseph's and St Patrick's are always open so that we visit our loved ones and are very well kept. Notre Dame is the worst keep cemetery I have ever seen. Will you even open for Memorial Day weekend?”
