“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“When my great-grandfather passed away, our family turned to Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, and I can’t say enough good things about the care and professionalism we experienced. From the very beginning, the gentlemen who came to pick him up from our home were incredibly respectful, kind, and gentle they treated him with such dignity that it brought comfort to everyone present. The facility itself is beautiful, peaceful, and thoughtfully maintained. The staff made sure every detail was handled perfectly, and they went above and beyond to accommodate our family’s needs. It meant the world to us. Gary and his staff truly combines compassion, professionalism in a way that helps families during one of the hardest times in life. I’m deeply grateful for everything they did for us and highly recommend them to anyone in need of funeral services.”

“I am a member of the religious Jewish community and a Chevra Kadisha. I have both attended funerals and performed the ritual of Taharah many times. All rituals and customs are strictly adhered to. Afar, or earth from the Holy Land is used in the preparation of the deceased and is included with the body of the deceased during Tahara. While I have seen in less observant circles those who bring packages of earth from Eretz Yisroel to the cemetery, it is NEITHER custom nor Jewish Law to do so; some do it merely for “show”. A Jewish cemetery is a consecrated place; putting expensive Holy earth in the grave at the burial is simply redundant. Schoems is a third-generation Jewish family-owned funeral home and I think I speak quite knowledgeably when I say that as far as our community is concerned, the Schoem family is held in the highest regard. In terms of the facility: I was there again today. New carpet has recently been installed throughout. The staff which have been there for decades are professional and quite solicitous. The chapel itself is certainly the largest in the area, seating hundreds and they have quite a large parking area. These are of great importance to our community as we typically have a large number of attendees at funerals. I believe that the emotions of the day greatly heightened the sensitivities of the reviewer and frankly, I presume that nothing was going to be right no matter the efforts and expertise of The Chapel. May her grandfather’s memory be for a Blessing”

“I cannot say enough about the professionalism and compassion demonstrated by Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, its manager Gary Schoem, and their talented staff. From the very first phone call, they guide families with patience, clarity, and genuine care. They carefully address the specific needs of each family and service. They are fully committed to Jewish law and tradition. Their sensitivity during painful moments has brought tremendous comfort to three generations. The Jewish community of New Jersey is profoundly grateful for their exemplary service.”
