You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We went to my grandpa's viewing at the end of April and it was absolutely heartbreaking. It was the day after he passed away, he was laying on a gurney wearing the same clothes he was found in, and covered with a Hospital blanket. The staff were very cold and unfriendly towards us. They wouldn't speak to us unless we physically went into their office to ask them specific questions. They had no funeral pamphlet for him, no flowers to make it look comfortable, not even a comforting word. They were very reluctant to give us any funeral information at all. Our family is estranged from his wife(who "planned" everything) but as his family, we were not treated well. If only they would have communicated with us that nothing was being done and given us more than less than a days notice, we would have been able to at least give him a little bit of dignity with making him look appropriate, having flowers sent, something. It was sickening. I would absolutely not recommend Thompson-Larson for the final arrangements of your loved ones.”

“We can’t thank the staff at Thompson Larson enough for the way they took care of our family through an extremely difficult loss. Their compassion and professionalism is unrivaled and was greatly appreciated”

“I wasn't going to leave a negative review for this business, but after an awkward conversation with one of their employees today during a feedback call from them, I decided why not. The conversation started sincere, but when I was asked why my wife's review towards them was negative and I responded truthfully, I remembered why. My dad died this month, and I was disgusted with the less than thoughtful communication I received while dealing with the representative that we had for cremation and death certificate services. Major complaint I had previously was he asked me to do his job for him with gathering data for the death certificate. The Trinity HCS head nurse I spoke with mentioned the research for the death certificate was this funeral homes' job. I did mention this concern in an email response to a representative at this business. The communication from him was careless, unprofessional, and just sincere enough to receive our payment, not even acknowledging my concern. When I brought up partial reasoning for a negative review that my wife made today in my feedback call, he minimized my point of view in a smug and demeaning manner that defined passive aggressiveness, which is a problem I see with younger generations often in retail sectors these days. It almost felt like I was dealing with a rude teenage employee at McDonald's, who had slightly better vocabulary. His email communication lacked empathy, care, or respect. I won't say his name to be respectful, but this representative knows who he is. My dad's military service to this country deserved more respect than we got from this business. Update* on 4/22/25, I got a call from the owner - Ben - to make things right my on my dad's death certificate - said they could get them resent - its now 6/24/25, no calls back since. Guess we'll have to pay again with ND to get the copies we already paid for, so we have the correct cause of death on them. I just can't recommend this funeral home. I'm frankly surprised at their previous ratings. Maybe it's because our family isnt originally from Minot, so we aren't important? I don't know for sure.”
