You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Our family had an extremely upsetting experience with Oak Crest Funeral Home. During a time when compassion and professionalism should have been the priority, we were met with the opposite. Staff member Vidal Deleon acted unprofessionally and seemed more focused on controlling the situation than supporting a grieving family. Several family members were told they could not enter the visitation, and the way it was handled felt unnecessary and disrespectful. What made the situation even worse was Oak Crest’s decision to call the police based on the assumption that there would be a confrontation. There was no confrontation at all, yet officers were brought in to “supervise” the visitation. Shockingly, the next day Oak Crest contacted the police again and had them waiting at the cemetery. They even attempted to stop the daughter of the deceased from attending her own father’s burial. This behavior was not only unprofessional it was cruel. A funeral home should provide support, empathy, and dignity. Instead, Oak Crest created stress, embarrassment, and emotional harm during one of the hardest moments of our lives. I would strongly caution anyone considering this funeral home.”

“I was very disappointed in the way the whole staff was on Friday 30th. My dad who has served his country, community, and friends didn't receive a visitation he deserved. Honored, commended, not even one word spoken of him. Mr. Vidal you were a family friend a honor church going person who my dad always took the time to speak . Shameful how they let grieving people feel like a criminal. They kept people out of the visitation which should have been public. The way Oak Crest handled the church service was left to be desired. During the burial was a whole other story. The police were there to escort my husband and myself off the premises. Like I did something bad grieving my dad. Like a criminal. I truly feel if you have a loved one who you loved to be honor the way they should be, go somewhere else. Alicia Gonzales Cadena”

“I was very disappointed and saddened by the treatment my family received from some of the staff at Oak Crest Funeral Home—specifically Vidal, David, and another man whose name I did not get. Initially, Vidal was very friendly and expressed concern about the way we were being left out of decisions, especially since he has known our family since we were kids. However, after speaking with the wife, his attitude toward us noticeably changed. We arrived at the visitation an hour before the scheduled start so we could spend quiet time with my dad before everyone else arrived, only to be told we could not go in until 6:00 and that “only family” was allowed—despite the fact that we are immediate family. At the end of the visitation, I thanked David for everything. He looked at me and then looked away without responding. Later, we found out that a police officer had been placed on site because the wife claimed we might start trouble. Nothing happened, and it was clear that the concern was unfounded. At the burial service, the situation escalated further when staff attempted to have my sister and brother-in-law illegally banned from our own father’s burial by arranging for police officers to be present at the cemetery to escort them out. Another Oak Crest employee, whose name I did not get, also attempted to tell us we were not allowed to video or record any part of the burial. There was no compassion, no empathy, and no professionalism shown during one of the most painful times of our lives. The embarrassment and unnecessary stress placed on my sister and the rest of our family was completely uncalled for and could have easily been avoided.”
