You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“They rushed everything. Everything. When we first went in to see my papaw, the little man (not sure his name) decided to ask if they “did a great job?” Meaning with his makeup and everything as we were all crying and trying to process him being gone. After everything was paid for, the owner called my granny on Monday, just 2 days after the burial to tell her that digging a grave wasn’t included in with the expenses she already paid and that she now owes $800 for them digging a grave. So the owner failed to mention that prior . What I mean by everything was rushed by there was really no time to grief. They wanted us to come and get out pretty much. And told us we had to get our flowers out by A certain time or they were going to throw them out. My granny is completely disappointed with how they run their business these days and doesn’t recommend them at all. They just care about money not your loved one.”

“I was disappointed when attending a recent funeral service. During the funeral the CD player skipped during the playing of a song picked by the family, which I wrote off as probably a bad CD submitted by the family. Then when the funeral home played their CD as attendants were leaving the funeral, their CD skipped just as bad revealing the CD player was the problem. Secondly, I was very disappointed when a funeral home worker decided to vacuum during the funeral with a vacuum in the waiting area that produced a loud high pitch sound fully disturbing the attendants of the funeral. Family charged with flower delivery when actually the family had to go pick up the flowers. Did not have anyone assigned to stop traffic at the red lights during the funeral possession, which almost resulted in three accidents.”
