You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This was one of the most difficult times our family has ever gone through, and unfortunately our experience with this funeral home added unnecessary stress and disappointment to an already painful situation. First, I want to acknowledge Dale and Missy. They were kind, compassionate, and professional. In a field where empathy matters most, they treated our family with dignity and respect, and I am truly grateful for their help. Unfortunately, the experience with Brian and Jason was the complete opposite. During the visitation — while our loved one was lying in repose and family members were grieving — Brian approached me about payment for the funeral and began asking questions about the life insurance beneficiary. He requested a name, phone number, address, date of birth, and even a full Social Security number. Being approached about financial matters in that moment, during the visitation itself, felt deeply inappropriate and insensitive. There is a time and place to discuss finances, but approaching a grieving family member beside the body of their loved one to gather insurance details is something I never expected to experience at a funeral home. Jason appeared unprepared throughout the process. On multiple occasions our own family members found themselves explaining things and offering guidance, which should never happen when the staff are supposed to be the professionals guiding the service. What made this experience so troubling was the lack of compassion and professionalism shown by both individuals. Funerals require empathy, organization, and an understanding of how vulnerable families are during these moments. Instead, parts of the experience felt transactional and impersonal, as though the focus had shifted from caring for a grieving family to securing payment. A funeral home should be a place where families feel supported and cared for during one of the worst moments of their lives. Unfortunately, our interactions with Brian and Jason left us feeling the exact opposite. Again, Dale and Missy were the only reason this experience had any measure of compassion. Without them, it would have been far worse. If I could have put zero stars I would have but it wouldn't let me.”

“I lost my grandmother Monday and my grandfather had to go Tuesday to fill out paperwork. Unfortunately I had to work but I decided that my family was more important than getting screamed at work. None of what they were saying to us felt sincere, just more of a script. The ladies that work there was very kind but the men we had to talk to were not and felt void. There’s much more but at this point I don’t believe it matters.”
