You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I cannot say enough about the care and compassion shown by Forastiere Family Funeral Home. I was in London when my grandmother passed, and they helped me immediately, easing an incredibly stressful and emotional situation. My grandmother was cremated at their facility, and they handled every detail with professionalism and kindness. They took care of all the necessary documents so I didn’t have to worry about logistics while grieving. What truly sets them apart is how they go above and beyond—weeks later, they even checked in on me to offer continued support and services. Their thoughtfulness, empathy, and dedication made a very difficult time more manageable. I am deeply grateful for everything they did.”

“So I must say im not super thrilled. First to start there were many mis communications while working with this funeral home but mis communications often happen and as long as they are fixed everything is fine. Tho what really displeased me is that when I got my cremations back I never got my screw driver tool back that I had to provide for the urn that I had picked out to be used. Never got that back along with a black velvet bag that also came with the urn that the bag of ashes were supposed to go inside of before being put inside of the urn. Upon me just now opening the urn to fill necklaces of my loved ones ashes I found the black velvet bag to be missing. I am very displeased with using forestiere funeral home and do not plan to ever use them again. If somebody else has to supply items or have items that come with urns or etc. Should be receiving all provided items back. Not just 1.”

“We met with Emily in East Longmeadow to go over arrangements and she is wonderful. She carefully goes over the process with you step by step, doesn't rush you, takes time to answer questions. She is very professional, warm and compassionate. She made a difficult time feel much easier to deal with.”
