You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
“Do you offer payment plans?”
Many funeral homes allow you to spread the cost over time. Ask about down payments, terms, and financing options.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“I feel blessed to have found Allen Brothers to help with our unfortunate circumstance. When things became too difficult to process, Tonya at Allen Brothers came through and did everything we needed. Their communication is great and everything was completed just like they said they would do. Thank you for everything.”

“After loosing our 8 year old son, we picked this funeral home based off of location to from the organ donations list of options in SD. Our experience was awful. We only needed them for cremation services as we were holding the funeral elsewhere. The director was not knowledgeable in what could be said on the death certificate for a child for occupation since we didn't want student listed as he was a child and didn't have an occupation. She then submitted it without confirming and then amended it without speaking to us about how it would change the DC. It made it two pages which doesn't sound like a big deal but it is when it shouldn't have happened in the first place. She then didn't sign it correctly so we had to go pick our sons remains and then wait another week and a half to get the DC. She was not empathetic and very cold. After calling to make a complaint to the owners, a month afterwards I was told they had my son's handprints and asked if we wanted them. No one asked if we wanted that done, it was a nice gesture but why a month after we had already been to the office twice were we told about them and not given them before. It just felt extremely off putting. Were they ever going to reach out and let us know they had our sons handprints? I would highly avoid using them. They only made our tragic situation even more damaging. 7 months prior to this I buried my father in Florida and the funeral home was exceptional so I know how it should be handled. This company did not remotely come close to handling things correctly.”

“Our experience with Allen Brothers was wonderful. They took care of all the details during this difficult time. The staff was very helpful and were able to guide us through the decisions we needed to make. The chapel is a beautiful peaceful place. We were able to have the viewing in the chapel, along with the funeral service. We received many complements from our guests. We would highly recommend Allen Brothers.”
