You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“We had a lovely experience with this funeral home, namely Eddy, when my brother passed in May 2022. Since our experience was so good before, when my mother passed away on the first of this month, we assumed we'd receive the same quality this go round. Both experiences were complete opposites. First of all, my mother died on a Saturday, I contacted the funeral home on Monday about choosing their services, paid everything in full in cash on Tuesday, waited for them to contact me so my sisters and I could have a final viewing, but heard nothing until I called them both Wednesday AND Thursday, then found out Thursday that there was a "miscommunication" and they hadn't even picked her body up from the coroner's office yet. They couldn't explain to us what exactly the miscommunication was. We finally got to see her Friday afternoon. With my brother, the prayer cards we paid for were wonderful quality, they even printed us extra at no charge because so many people showed up to his service, which was unexpected. They're printed on card stock, with an image we picked on the back and a photo of him and a prayer on the front. Legible, the photo is a good size, etc. With my mother, they're less so. We didn't pay the extra $1 per card for lamination, but they came laminated anyway because they're printed on plain printer paper and sat on some card stock. They would literally fall apart if they hadn't been laminated. The photo of her is half the size than the one of my brother, the font is harder to read, and there's an error in the spacing. When we asked for locks of my brothers hair, we were given it in small keepsake boxes, the locks held together by a rubber band. When we asked for locks of my mother's hair, it was given to us wet and in a ziplock bag, wrapped in a paper towel. One of the employees told me she was going to wash her hair before she cut it, but I didn't expect them to be wet when I picked them up. When I felt ready to open the bag literally 20 minutes ago, I unwrapped the paper towel to find a wad of matted hair. I can't even pull it apart to separate it between family it is so tangled and matted. I think the photo speaks for itself. I'm not sure if the way these events were handled is directly tied to Eddy no longer working here or what else might have changed, but obviously this not the level of care we received with our last loss or that we expected with this one. With everything else we're dealing with, it feels a bit unfair to receive services where the quality would make us ask to have it redone.”

“We had a wonderful experience working with Blair at Myrtle Beach Funeral Home. She was a great source of calm, expertise, kindness, and thoughtfulness regarding my dad. She coordinated getting him from SC to WV and even helped get his 21 gun salute and military honors planned as well. Obviously no one wants to have to go through anything related to funeral home services, yet she made things a lot easier with her kindness, professionalism, respect, and proactiveness. Thank you again!”

“My wife's father passed sooner than we expected from cancer. Making arrangements for him seemed like a daunting task. Blair made this process easy. Walking me through all the documentation needed for the cremation. I never felt pressured to add-on services we did not need. The deceased was presented in a dignified manner. The family was very pleased and we said our final goodbyes. Blair took her time in this process. Explained the timeline in which the cremation would take place. She was very compassionate to our needs.”
