“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Sarah helped me so much getting through the unexpected death of my wife. Asking the right questions at the right time and being flexible when she could, always keeping me in the know. From the time we met, her smile comforted me and my daughter. We had the death certificates one day after our initial meeting--this was so important to me as I made my way through adding/changing beneficiaries as quickly as possible with all my family living out of town. Nobody wants to spend much time at a funeral home, but when life happens, I would highly recommend you consider Sarah at Penwell-Gabel.”

“I cannot recommend Sarah Hove enough. She really helped our family during a tough time. If you go to Penwell I would request her. After completing our family members service, we reached back out to preplan the service of another family member. I had said in my email to the planner what all I wanted to accomplish, how we wanted similar options to service that was just completed a month ago and it was apparent she had not reviewed my email or the service arrangements we had just done. They gladly took the money but the preplanning is lacking. We wanted to have the service folder, obituary draft (she said she didnt really do that part- ok why didnt you have someone available who could), song choices, flower choices all completed. The only thing that happened was collecting the money and picking flowers. She forgot to even ask us about lunch arrangements. Its not really true preplanning. May want to consider other options if you want true planning. Or start with Sarah.”

“Working with the staff at Penwell Gable was a wonderful experience. The director (Sean Meyer) was professional, knowledgeable, attentive, caring and went out of his way for us. The day of the funeral, all three men at the chapel were very caring to all the family. Everything happened better than I expected. If you need a professional funeral home to help you with all the details and still show the warmth and caring needed at the time of the death of a loved one, this is the funeral home to choose. You will not regret it.”
