You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

Sooooo professional, knew the answer to every question and had a solution for everything!!The staff as well as Mr Jefferson were superb in all aspects of the cares and service given; as I said before no words cannot convey the outstanding service that was given. It s a good feeling when your loved one has passed and you know they received the best homegoing on EARTH!! “If I could give ZERO stars, I would. Losing a loved one is already heartbreaking, but Heavenly Gate Funeral Home made our experience even worse. My mother-in-law passed away a week ago, and the hospital required us to arrange for a funeral home to pick up her body since they had no morgue facilities. In a state of grief, I quickly looked online and saw that Heavenly Gate had a rating just under 4 out of 5 stars. I regret not digging deeper. I called them, and they assured me they would pick up the body within three hours. That was the first lie. They were late, and after multiple calls, even their own dispatch struggled to contact the person assigned to pick her up. When the individual finally arrived, the second red flag became clear—he used a tattered, stained, and faded red velvet cloth to cover my mother-in-law’s body. It was an absolutely disgraceful sight. No family should have to see their loved one treated with such disregard. The following day, my wife, sisters-in-law, and I visited Heavenly Gate to make arrangements. The moment we arrived, we knew something was off. The exterior of the building was unkempt, with worn bricks or granite on the porch and a front door that was scratched and shabby. Inside, the dimly lit lobby smelled overwhelmingly of air freshener—clearly masking something unpleasant. The old, worn carpet only added to the discomfort. A staff member greeted us from behind the desk, and a young man, dressed unprofessionally in joggers and slides with socks, escorted us to a cramped, overheated conference room. It was stifling, making an already difficult conversation even more unbearable. Then we met Timothy, the funeral director—an experience that sealed our decision to take our business elsewhere. From the start, Tim was dismissive and unprofessional. We explained that we had a large family and needed detailed information, including pricing, to discuss with everyone involved. Instead of being helpful, he was unprepared, had only one copy of the brochure, and had to print more on the spot. When we inquired about space for the service, we were told their chapel only held 50 people—far too small—and that we would have to make arrangements at a church ourselves. At that point, we had enough. We asked about the process for transferring my mother-in-law’s remains to another funeral home, and that’s when things took a disturbing turn. Tim immediately became defensive, bringing up race in a completely inappropriate way—making comparisons between Black-owned funeral homes and white-owned ones. He seemed to assume that because we were Black, we should feel obligated to support his business, regardless of the poor service. To make matters worse, he misquoted scripture in a manipulative attempt to guilt us into staying, even implying that we might not be able to afford the burial. It was offensive, degrading, and completely unprofessional. On our way out, I attempted to take a look at the chapel, only to be abruptly told to shut the door. In the brief moment I had, I saw caskets stored inside—not a respectful or appropriate use of a space meant for grieving families. We immediately transferred my mother-in-law to another funeral home, where we were treated with the dignity and respect we deserved. Heavenly Gate was a nightmare from start to finish. If you are grieving a loved one, do yourself a favor—look elsewhere. This place is unprofessional, unorganized, and utterly disrespectful.”
