You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Every member of the staff was thoughtful, kind, respectful, and accommodating. Chris, Amy, and Liane made themselves available at all hours to help plan the funeral. When I gave Liane a few dozen photos of my father throughout his life to produce a DVD of photos and music, she spent an hour helping us find the appropriate music and then scanned the photos and coordinated with the DVD producer to ensure that the DVD could be made on time for the wake. Amy also arranged to have someone be at the funeral home to receive flowers that were delivered on the day before the funeral. There was a snowstorm the night before and the morning of the funeral, yet all of the staff was there when we arrived at 8:00 AM, and everything was in order. Chris made sure that everything went smoothly — he took charge of coordinating logistics with the church for the funeral Mass, with cemetery for the burial, and with the restaurant for the funeral luncheon— so that we could focus on reminiscing with relatives about our father. While we attended the funeral Mass, some of the drivers went to the cemetery to make sure that the cemetery road had been plowed, and to set up several chairs at the cemetery for anyone who might be unsteady on the snowy terrain. After the burial, Chris made a special trip with his van to deliver large photo collages and easels to the restaurant for the funeral luncheon. The funeral home itself is stately and spacious with beautiful woodwork, large paned windows, and a wrap around porch, all of which feels like a home rather a commercial building. Holts was a source of comfort.”

“I recommend if they offer financing even with a hefty down payment to read the terms well. My bill was about 8 grand in full. I paid a bit more than $6,000 up front for my fathers funeral/cremation but due to estate/probate issues I wasn't able to pay until real estate property of my fathers was sold a couple of years later. With interest I ended up owing more than $6,000 dollars on top of the $6,000 I had already paid initially with a balance around 2k that tripled over two years. I understand funeral homes are businesses but this review is just to make ppl in a time of grief and stress aware of how a small balance can become a huge balance if barriers in life outside of your control occur. Always read the fine print, no matter how bad your heart hearts at the time. Also to add I'm sure there rebuttal will be something along the lines of a payment plan but they had already in the first 6 months after we spoke about me needing time then they put a claim into the estate which guaranteed they would be paid upon sake of the home, yet not once did they ever say a high amount of interest would be accruing so was unfortunately naive as being in this situation for the first time and ended up paying almost triple what I had originally owed them a couple of years later. There are many funerals homes in this city. It doesn't make anyone a bad person to do due diligence after the death of a loved one. I wish I had and I hope this review helps others make proper decisions and planning after an abrupt unexpected death.”

“Truly, as good a funeral experience as could be expected. Kind caring compassionate and accommodating. You won't feel rushed or pushed in any way. It is certainly worth adding to your list of possible future locations.”
