You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“This is our second burial at Swan Lake within 6 months. Neither one went well. Yesterday we laid my Mom to rest, but while watching them lower her into the vault it was very disturbing. The hole was not dug large enough for the brand of vault purchased. The vault company was very upset by this after requesting multiple times that they consider these things. The vault was basically shoved into the hole by the grounds keepers, who were smoking during the process. Something was said to them about being careful, and the grounds person snapped. They were incredibly rude. I pray in the end my Mom is laid underground correctly and it doesn’t have any damage. I think an owner of Swan Lake should oversee each burial to make sure that it is done properly and respectfully. The grounds keepers should consider at least wearing “professional” looking coveralls or work shirts with the company logo. Look more put together and show more respect to families and loved ones, even if they don’t stay back to watch. Basically have a heart.”

“I'm honestly shocked at the lack of compassion and patience I witnessed today. I took my 84 year old client here to design her husband's headstone. He was a veteran and they purchased everything years ago. She buried him Saturday after 62 years of marriage and this place had the audacity to be condescending, rude, snarky, impatient, and unkind. I can't wrap my head around why anyone would treat someone that's gieving like that, ESPECIALLY someone in the funeral business. Edit: notice how the company only responds to the positive reviews! They're awful and literally do not care! Any reputable establishment would follow through with the negative reviews and experiences and try to reconcile!”

“For some reason this winter the wreaths on our four graves have not stayed in the ground. Thanks to Eric and Logan for helping me get them back in the ground! Both were very nice and professional!”
