You're not expected to know this. These questions help you compare and avoid surprises.
“Can I see your General Price List?”
Federal law (FTC Funeral Rule) requires them to give you itemized pricing. You have every right to ask.
“Do you accept insurance assignment?”
This means they bill the insurance company directly. You don't pay thousands upfront and wait to be reimbursed.
“What's included vs. what's extra?”
Packages may not include everything. Ask about the casket, embalming, transportation, facility fees, and death certificate copies.
Know Your Rights
The FTC Funeral Rule protects you. Every funeral home must provide an itemized General Price List if you ask — in person or over the phone. You are never required to buy a package and can choose services individually. You also have the right to use a casket purchased elsewhere.

“Ordered monument in October of 2023. After many excuses and being told it was on the truck and going to be set different times and multiple trips to their shop in Topeka (approximately a 45 minute drive) they finally set it on August 25th2025. On Huttons website they advertised that they set their stones on a poured concrete foundation reinforced with fiber mesh and that their guaranteed foundations go well below the frost line so their foundations will not tip, tilt or sink. I was at the cemetery when the two people that work at the shop came to set the stone and they hadn’t any idea when I asked them about the foundation going below the frost line. I showed them a copy of the web site that stated that it did so they called Tyler Hutton and he said to put the foundation in the way they always had. I told them several times that I wasn’t happy the way they were doing it , but was told this is the way Tyler taught me and that’s what they did. I gave up at that point and even tried to help them so they would just get out of there and give me time to think. When it came time to actually set the stone I noticed that it looked kind of skinny so I measured it and it was 6” thick and not an 8” like was ordered on our signed contract. Keep in mind my daughter passed almost two years ago at this time so I let them set the incorrect stone ,base and apron so that she could have a stone there until they got what we had ordered two years earlier. After some heated phone calls and a meeting with Tyler and Chris Hutton that I recorded on my phone we agreed that I would put in the foundation the way I wanted it and that they would do a new stone , base and apron and guaranteed it to be set in four to six weeks which six weeks would be October 9th 2025. Today is October 22nd and tomorrow makes eight weeks since their promise to have it done in six weeks. I poured our foundation last week to allow time for cure and now we wait again. I’m sending a couple photos to show their foundation and the one we did that is below frost line. Sorry for the lengthy review but when a business falsely advertises what they do and are so deceptive it’s just plain wrong and hard for me to keep it short. BEWARE Just a short update. Today makes 9 weeks since the meeting with Tyler and Chris Hutton where they guaranteed to have our stone done and set as agreed on on our signed contract from 10-26-2023 and guess what it’s still not done and their not going to keep the promise that Tyler made two weeks ago that he guaranteed it would be done in October. I’m sending a photo showing Huttons false claims on their foundations that supposedly goes below frost line and the wording change Tyler made mid September of 2025. In my opinion and I would imagine many concrete contractors a deception that will cause problems with our loved one’s monuments in years to come. Hopefully all the foundations that were incorrectly installed will be fixed and made right and some kind of oversight prevent this from continuing to happen. UPDATE Our stone is finally set on the foundation that I did on my own because Hutton evidently didn’t know how to do it correctly. Again I hope that present and past customers look into how the foundations were put in under your monuments. Unless Hutton contracted out the foundation and stone setting to an outside contractor I doubt that is done below frost like Hutton advertised. Do your homework listen to these reviews. There’s a lot of talk about the family history and all on their website but do a little research on Chris Hutton and you might find some interesting recent history. It’s all public just need to look. NOT THE RIGHT PEOPLE FOR THIS LINE OF WORK!!!!!”

“DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. They will steal your money and under deliver. Had 2 stones paid for and both installed after a LONG LONG WAIT. 1 was not set and 1 was set incorrectly. They would not fix or actually set the stone, both were paid for. Called, stopped in several times and they told us several new dates, new excuses every time for over a year. We finally had to hire another company to fix both headstones in Mayetta, Kansas. New company was fast, honest and reasonable. Hutton is a scam and they prey on their customers.”

“No stars should be an option as that is what they deserve. ZERO stars. While Susan and Chris provide attentive and responsive service on the funeral side, please DO NOT expect the same from Hutton Monuments which happens to be the same owner but run by their son Tyler. Tyler lies left and right to clients to keep them at bay. For months he kept telling me that my relative’s stone was in and ready to be set. I flew out to Topeka after 13 months of waiting after Tyler told me it would be installed by 3/14/25. I went to the cemetery to see nothing. I went to Huttons and demanded to see the stone. What I saw was what they thought was my relative’s stone. The stone wasn’t even ready. In fact, it was still wrapped as it came from Iowa, even though Tyler, time and time again, lied telling me it was all ready to set and all they were waiting for was the weather to cooperate. I paid the stone in full. Never do that. Make sure to pay 1/2 and the other half upon completion of the work. Maybe, just maybe, that would’ve provided the initiative to get it done! Live and learn. Do NOT get your stone at Hutton’s unless you want to wait years to close the chapter in your grieving process!”
